I came from a family with a misguided parenting philosophy. Growing up, my parents constantly told me I wasn’t good enough and that I would amount to nothing in life. Sadly, it was the only way my parents knew how to motivate me. Let me be clear, both my father and mother are kindhearted people; they were merely doing what they had learned from their parents and the parenting philosophy of the previous generation. I received daily beatings from my father and was verbally put down by my mother until I was 16 years old, at which point I took action. I left my parents and my home to travel to America by myself and start a new life. It was the beginning of a journey of imperfect actions to reinvent a new me.
I arrived in the US not knowing how to speak English, a girl who’d been told she’d amount to nothing. I had low-self esteem, a terrible self-image, a severed relationship with my family, but I always acted to improve my situation. The actions were rarely perfect, and along the course of the journey I encountered many obstacles, including bad relationships, challenges in the business world, and even self-sabotage. I was married and divorced by the age of twenty. I associated myself with the wrong people. I was clinically diagnosed with depression and had thoughts of suicide.
For so long, it seemed like I was swimming against the current. Fortunately, I was able to learn some invaluable life lessons by overcoming these obstacles in my life. I have always paid close attention to my past and I have always acted to improve my situation, and as a result, I developed a powerful set of practical life skills and a new belief system.
