A Beautiful lady
Welcome back!
When I was a young girl back home in Hong Kong, there was this lady that lived 5 floors up from us. Over there we all live in high rise and taking an elevator is a must for everyone in the building. The first time I saw this lady Mrs. Wong was indeed in an elevator.
I remember I couldn’t take my eyes off her. I knew I shouldn’t stare and I was trying very hard not to. Mrs. Wong looked so different from any other women I have ever since before. As a youngster it was impossible for me not to keep looking at her. Her face was disfigured. Half of her face looks like it was melted down.
Later I remember telling my friends about this disfigured lady, I ask my friends if they have ever since a melted down face before. My friends said they know of her, but none of them have ever spoken with her. I wonder what could have happened to her.
Then a week or so went by, and I ran into her again in the elevator. So this time I decided I was going to say Hi to her. She smiles back at me and reply “Hello, how are you?” And that was the day I learned she is Mrs. Wong.
Mrs. Wong and I developed a friendship. I learned that she was burned during an accident when was she was a young girl. She was just a little older that I was at the time. Mrs. Wong never has any children, due to a medical condition.
Once a week, I would go over to her house and we would have pudding together. She was kind and gentle, a very peaceful being. One day I ask Mrs. Wong why she put on makeup and perfume every day? I told her my mother doesn’t put makeup on because my mother said, people would stare at you when you have make up on, the makeup make you look different then everybody else. Mrs. Wong looks at me, she smiles and said, “People who are the kind that would stare, they will stare regardless. So we might just well put our faces on, to give them some good to stare at!” I looked at her and we both had a big laugh. Then Mrs. Wong said, “I feel beautiful with make up on!” We played make up together that day.
Eventually Mrs. Wong had to move away and we had our last pudding together. I told Mrs. Wong that she is the most beautiful person I have ever met, and I really appreciated our time spend together in her home - a loving environment. I told her I will never forget about her. And I never did. The most beautiful lady ever!

Hi Giovanna, Thanks for sharing your story…how kind you were then & glad that you liked the puddings : o ) Brings back memories for me as well–I remember, back in Middletown High School North in Middletown, NJ where I grew up, I was friends w/this girl, Marie, that no one else in the school would even talk to–she was a lot fatter and taller than anyone else at the school, so for that reason no one spoke to her and would make fun of her. I met her in the school cafeteria one day, sitting alone, and went up to her and sat down. She said, “Are you here to dump my milk all over my food and make fun of me?” I remembered telling her that I would never do that and that I don’t believe in making fun of others since I wouldn’t want others to make fun of me. We stayed friends throughout high school, but lost touch after she moved away shortly after high school.

I read this with my daughter as she’s going through chicken pox right now and is very worried about the aftermatch - scarring. Somehow, this made her realize that beauty is a mental state, my words of course. What she said was more in the lines of, “Of course, Ma, i’d still be beautiful. I’ll just put powder on it! It’s all about imagination.”.
