Don’t be a Social Network Donkey! How to make comments with etiquettes?

Welcome back!

This morning I woke up to check on my blog, and find a Donkey posted a comment on my yesterday’s posted. This guy wrote “ I think I have done a better job! Come to my site www. 123456 .com .” What he was talking about was my Advanced Blog Training. I naturally click on his link to see his site. I found that his site is a new and he is on his 2nd post. Also, he has a blog training product for sale.

As a blog trainer, one of the thing I tell new blogger to do is to go post comment on other blogger’s site. This will help get the word out about your new blog and it is a great way to make friends with other bloggers and start your own blog community.

Often time new bloggers would ask “what should I do and what comment do I write the first time visiting a blog?” So I am going to take this opportunity to talk about visiting etiquettes.  Ways to get you started off the right foot with making friends with other bloggers.

A blog site is like a home of the person who writes the blog. So when you go to someone’s blog it is very much like going to someone’s home. You would be friendly and polite at some else’s house right? Same at their blog! And if you really don’t like the blog or you do not agree with what that blog is about, you can go somewhere else.  No need to be rude.

A question I often get is “what do I write in the comment?” Just think about when you are at the kitchen table having a meal with a new friend at his or her house. What kind of things is appropriate for you to say? It is the same for commenting at someone’s blog. Just like you wouldn’t go to your new friend’s; sitting in their kitchen and say, “I am a much better cook then you! Let’s go to my house. I have better food there.”  The same about making comments, you shouldn’t go to someone else’s blog and say you have a better product, come to my site.

In the end, comments like this never get approve to be posted as a comment on anybody’s site. And this guy he didn’t make any friends with any bloggers.

Comments that have value to contribute to the post, is always great. If you enjoy the post, let the writer know. If the post brings up feelings, may be you would like to share that. Whatever you write, please don’t abuse you ability to comment as a way of spam to sell your product.

Use the same common sense online as you would do off line.  How would you act if you want to be friends? Don’t be a Donkey!

Great post, no offence to the commenter, if I wanted to be taught how to blog I’d prefer to be taught by someone who has a lot of posts under their belt and have been established for a long while that knows what they are talking about. I love the akismet plug in on my blog, blast those spam posts away.

Forums are also the same they are treated as an extension of the owner’s home you don’t want to play by my rules then please kindly leave my home and do not come back.

Sounds like this blogger NEEDS your Advanced Blog Training course!! He could definitely use some tips on social networking etiquette. :-) We love your analogy of commenting as if you’re visiting a friends’ home for the first time. You’re always filled with great analogies!!

Many Blessings….

sounds like he’s a bit naive ..but I guess he’ll learn .. if he’s humble enough .. yes - don’t hurt others .. but I certainly don’t want to be kicked by the donkey!? Hilary

I like your analogy that visiting a blog is like visiting a writer’s home. I never thought of if from that perspective. I think my comments will be much more constructive from now on because your well put blog post on etiquette. Thank you for sharing with us!
