How I became Giovanna?

For as long as, I can remember! Growing up I was a little too loud and too opinionated for my culture. I never fit into that mold of a nice quiet Chinese girl. To only be seen and not be heard! That wasn’t me. I knew too much, I had too much to say to keep quite.

When I was 11years old; one day at school in world social studies class, the teacher was teaching us about Italy and their culture. My teacher said, “Italians are a very colorful people. They embrace people being vocal. Even speaking with their hands is perfectly fine!” I thought to myself: Italian that is what I should have been, if I lived in Italy I would fit in. I filed those thoughts in the back of my head, dreaming that one day I would go there.

Then when I was 16 years old a lot of my father’s friends were sending their children overseas for schooling. Doing so is a sign of wealth. It is a sign of an affluent family. My father asked if I would like to go overseas to study. I jumped at the chance to go away. I thought to myself, this will bring me closer to Italy where I belong.

So at the age of 16 I came to America and I was asked what my English name was. And I said “Giovanna” an Italian name. America was supposed to be a pit stop for me. I thought I would make my way to Italy in a few years. In Italy, that is where I would start living my life. What I didn’t realize is that the United Stated is the place to be!

My action in leaving the life that I could not fit into was the best decision I ever made. I came to America to find freedom and also to reinvent a new life. For me the effect of being in America was beyond greatness! This Country accepts me as I am, a willful Italian in a little Chinese woman’s body!

Do what your heart tells you to, even if it is to go to a different continent! It is never too late or too early. The time is Now!

I love this article, moving to another country is a great way to start a new chapter in your life. I cannot afford to move toa totally different country, however I am planning to move to a different part of the UK to kick start a new life, to be closer to the sea.

I still have plans to leave the UK, I hope I won’t be too old to leave when I eventually get the opportunity.

Hi Giovanna — we’re glad you stayed. I made a move recently. Not a new country or even a new state… just 2 hours north. It’s been quite a learning experience.

Dear Share

Thanks for reading the story. Yes, moving here was the best thing I have even done. Funny you should say that about Fearless, I guess I didn’t even think about fear. I just want to be free!

Thank You for you comment, I look forward to reading more from you.

It is very interesting to learn who you are, what you are, where are you from. Dreams! I believe that dream is powerful. Powerful to send you to your destination. I will write about myself, too.
