Southwest Airline! A different kind of Airline…

In 1966 a man name Rollin King had a vision to free the sky, to make flying affordable for everyone.  At the time airfare regulation kept airline ticket’s pricing not affordable for everyday.    

 

King invited his lawyer friend Herb Kelleher to dinner. King wrote his idea about ‘Sky Shuttle’ on a cocktail napkin. The two men talked over dinner about how they can make it affordable. By cutting down on the all frugal, unnecessary items; they through of clever ways can make traveling affordable likes a bus in the sky.    
 
King’s vision was so big that, Kelleher bitted onto it and decided to join in this venture. Herb Kelleher gave up his practice – to focus 100% of his attention to battled in the courthouse with Continental Airline and a couple other the major airlines as well. It was these big airlines’s plan to tie up King and Kelleher in court proceedings and court fees. Herb Kelleher battle the humongous airlines in court and he was only sustaining by his own money.
 

To make matters even more interesting, shortly into their new venture of Southwest Airline. They ran into financial trouble. The two men were faced with a decision; to sell off one of their airplane or to lay off some of their 70 employees? They decided to keep their employees and sell off one of their airplane. Instead of doing it quietly and not let the employees know the airline were in trouble. King and Kelleher called a meeting; they told their employees that they chose the employees and gave up one airplane, and now the airline only have 3 airplanes.

 

The two men than asked their loyal employees to meet a new standard “to keep the terminal turnaround time in 15 minutes”. Southwest airline were the only airline that was able to get it all done in 15 minutes. It might be because Southwest got a different kind of commitment level from their employees.  

Southwest Airline it’s one of the most successful airlines in history and Rollin King and Herb Kelleher achieved things that nobody ever thought they could.

Success if found in acting on our ideas inspite of the odds. Southwest Airlines has been making money for a long time when other airlines have been struggling. Great article.

Whenever I have to fly anywhere on the west coast, I check Southwest first. The prices are still reasonable and the service beats the other airlines hands down.
