Get off that merry go round.

Welcome back!

I was watching our 11 months old son playing with my husband. The kid had his eyes on a cable that was lying on the ground. He was playing with the cable and my husband kept telling him to stop playing with the cable. Every time my husband said “Don’t play with the cable” Our son would stop and look at my husband for a few seconds, then he would continue to play with the cable. As if he stop because he know he is suppose to stop doing that, then he pause for a few seconds cause he know he should be doing something else. But because he can’t think of what else to do, each time he goes back to playing with that cable again.

So I decided to say something to my husband, “Stop telling him what NOT to do, instead tell him what to do!” My husband start playing with a toy, and our son happily went along to play with a toy and forgot about the cable.

In no way, am I a child expert. The true is I see the same kind of thing goes on with many adults. I see people going through life doing the same thing over and over and they found themselves in the same kind of situations time after time: dissatisfaction in their relationships, jobs, business, or way of life.

When a dissatisfy situation ends, a person get upset or depress over what happened; because he or she knows that wasn’t good and they should learn from it and don’t do the same anymore. But once the time to be upset or depressed were over, often time that person go back into the same kind of relationships, jobs, business, the same way of life…because they don’t know what else to do. As a result the same situations happened over and over again and over time these people are the ones that say “This always happen to me! That is just my luck!  May be that is what’s meant to be for me!”

My point is, if you keep doing what you always done, you are always going to get what you have always gotten. Go see somebody, get a coach, a mentor, read a book…whatever you can do to learn a better way. And if you cannot find a better way, do the opposite of what you normally done; at least you are taking an action to give yourself a chance. An imperfect action is better than no action. Get off the merry go round, today is a good day to start!

Hi Giovanna

Great advice for the new year. I especially like “do the opposite of what you normally do”. I’m going to bear that in mind. I think it could be useful…

Great post Giovanna — I’ve been thinking a lot about these kinds of situations and what I can do to flip the page and not be stuck in the same old situations. I’m going to start doing the opposite of what I would normally do and see how that works out.

Great advice! Sometimes it makes sense to write down a list of things you want, both personal and professional, then refer to it every day and ask, “Are my decisions supporting the things I want?” If you’re in a job or relationship that is not working, you will find yourself saying “No” quite often.
