Is one of our members and this is a story she shared with us about, how she found her long lost family with Imperfect Action!
I took imperfect action when I was 18 years old to find my father who I did not see for 17 years. This was 27 years ago! I didn’t know were to begin looking because my father was from Greece. I had never been to Greece. I was a year old when my mother divorced my father. As a child, I remember praying and crying myself to sleep at night, praying that my father would come for me. I also said the same prays for my grandparents (my father’s parents).
My desire to know my father and my grandparents grew to be my only desire! At 18, I decided to search for my father. I knew that he was born in Syros, Greece which is a very small Island near Turkey. So, I decided to take action and call Syros to hunt for my father. Of course, I quickly understood that I could not understand the language and took action to get an operator to translate for me. I called everyone that had the name “Stellas” living on that Island until I reached someone that said they didn’t know where my father was but they did know my Grandmother, “Veronica Stellas”, (we have the same name). The person on the phone said if you call back in one hour, I will have your Grandmother at my house so that you can speak to her. After one hour, I called and sure enough my Grandmother was there. I had someone translate that I was looking to find my father and my grandmother informed me that my father lived in Astoria, NY.
It was the first time that I had connected with my Grandmother and all I could understand that she said was “I LOVE YOU”. From that conversation and my imperfect action to search for my father, I was able to find him a few days after that conversation with my grandmother. The next day after connecting with my father, he was at my home in Georgia to see me for the first time in 17 years. I spent the next 15 years sharing my life with my father who I loved deeply until his death 12 years ago. It was the most rewarding imperfect action that I have ever taken.
In addition, I took action to travel to Greece by myself to meet my Grandparents and other family (Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins). It was an incredible experience. Those relationships and experiences changed my life forever, towards the better. I found a family that loved me dearly. I have been able to travel to Greece every 2 or 3 years for vacation to see my father’s sisters and brother, as well as, their children (my cousins). If I didn’t take that imperfect action to find my father… my life would have been very empty without knowing their love.

Hi Giovanna,
This is a lovely story. I was just chatting with friends that we’d found classmates we haven’t seen in decades on Facebook, and we thought that was such a big deal! Compared to this story, that is nothing. Thanks for sharing. You’ve just increased my respect for FB and I shall be more diligent there this year.
Hi Gio - yes Veronica’s story is very moving and worth sharing. I too am amazed at what we find out in life just by communicating - & social marketing if done well & with care and love is being so advantageous.
Your blog Imperfect Action is stirring up all sorts of ideas & thought provoking subjects - it’s great - thank you ..
Hi Giovanna
I think that it is wonderful that Veronica received such love from her actions.
Juliet
Thanks Giovanna for sharing Veronica’s story. Simply amazing!
Beautiful - being adopted this story was very moving. I often found if you visualize someone you’d like to connect with - life provides you the signs to find them again. The power of family - no matter how distant - is one of the most undervalued commodities we have during this tricky times.
Thanks for sharing this story.
Also, what a cool idea for a Facebook group. I just joined and looking forward to contributing.

Hi Giovanna
Thank you so much for sharing that very inspiring story. I am reminded by another story told to me by a South American former political refugee here in Sweden. He arrived, he had nowhere to go and didn’t speak any language readily understood here, but he got some coins and found a telephone booth and went up and down the pages of the telephone catalogue until he found a Spanish name… and he called that number and suddenly he had a roof over his head and someone to help him with immigration!
Hi Emma
Thanks for sharing your story about the refugee. It is another great example of Imperfect Action story. Thank you for that
Thanks for your comment and sharing this great story with us.

Wow what a story. Thanks for inspiring us. We know one thing taking action will lead us forward even if it’s a small step. If Veroncia wouldn’t have taken any action she would be in the same place she’s always been-without part of her family.
Hi Tess
Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us. Yes, if Veronica didn’t take action she would have miss out on a part of her family.
Thanks for your comment, I enjoyed reading them
