I am worth it!

Welcome back!

I was speaking with someone the other day, and as we were talking about depression and self-esteem. Suddenly I recalled something that I did nearly twenty years ago that was very important in my journey of reclaiming my self-esteem and overcoming depression. What I did was that I ask myself a question: “What are my values – in terms of qualities?” I set off to do this exercise, to write self-esteemdown 10 things that are great about me.

It was very hard for me, I recalled thinking - I am funny!? Then immediately I would think – that is not a big deal. So I didn’t count that one. Or I would think to myself – I am smart!? Then immediately I would think – But am I smart enough to claim I am smart?  So I hesitated to count that one as well. What happened was I kept discounting everything.  At the end of the day I didn’t have many items on my list. The following day, I took imperfect action:  I called one of my best friends and I ask her over the phone, “What are the ten best things about me?” Guess what! She might have wondered why I asked such a question. None the less, she did answer the question without hesitation. I did this two more times, I call 2 more close friends of mine and asked them the same question.

What I learned was that most of the items on my friends list were the same thing I thought of, such as, I am funny; I am smart…plus other things that I haven’t even thought about. The lesson here was that other people didn’t hesitate when it comes to naming my qualities. So I realized my qualities weren’t the problem, it was me feeling that I am worthy of those qualities…that is the real problem.

With the help of the three lists from my friends, I created my own list. In the beginning I read my list daily and I would end with, “These are my values that I have to offer and I Am Worth It!” This daily rituals helped me to put value on myself, and if one don’t see themselves as valuable and worthy to receive. How do we expect to be treated?

If you have never thought about this, maybe it is time for you do it. Write down your list of qualities, end the list with “These are my values that I have to offer and I Am Worth It!!”

What a great idea. I know for example my wife thinks I am better than I think I am. I assumed she was biased but it is more of an internal issue. I think maybe I should try this exercise and see if I am undervaluing me. Thanks Giovanna!

First off, let me say that I LOVE that picutre. I’ve seen it before, and I think it’s awesome.

With that said, this is a good message. Your personal story ties it together really well. What else might we be neglecting ourselves by not acknowledging it? You don’t have to stop being humble to acknowledge your positive traits.

Hi Gio .. thanks for those thoughts .. and it’s interesting to hear how others perceive us. Thanks for prompting us to work our values in terms of qualities .. and to keep the list up front.

That makes so much sense and I have often to this day feel the same way about myself. Every now and again I wonder what the heck I have contributed to this world, will I leave anything behind that people will remember me by. The only answer I have ever been able to come up with is my family. Probably not earth shattering stuff, but still very important to me.

One of the lessons that was tough for me was learning to value approach over results, and not to not put value on accomplishments or qualities, but to put value on simply being a fellow human on this planet Earth.

Whenever I think of life and value, I can’t help but to think of that one song in Rent.

We are all unique and have something that the world needs. We need to encourage one another as we progress in life!

This is great exercise to do - step back and reflect on yourself.
Self reflection is good but not the best, what you have done is better - getting feedback from friends.
The best feedback though is the one that….comes from you friends friends…. sometimes your friend might be uncomfortable telling you the truth, but she is comfortable sharing it with her other friend.
Same with the customers… the real feedback is the one that your customers share about your with their friends…. at least this is what they say at HarvardBusiness.org

But it is really tough to find out that ;)
So, it’s better imperfect action vs no action, eh? ;)

Hi Sire

If it is important to you, then it is earth shattering in your world. And that is important enough in my book :-)

This is a very strong exercise - something that we all should take a few minutes to do. I’d also recommend complimenting this with making an appreciation list. Every morning write down 100 things you’re thankful for. Its amazing how powerful making lists like these can do.

That photo exemplifies the way all cats feels about themselves. Human can learn bunch from them about self-esteem. With a little humbleness thrown in, of course.

Giovanna,

I agree. You are funny! You are smart!

Great post about self-affirmation. We all need to do this from time to time.
