Your Big Break.
Welcome back!
Do you remember the pager!? They were poplar before the cell phone days. Well, the last time I had a pager was during my start up with my first computer company. I worked out of my home. I had my friend made a voice mail recording for the company, so if a customer were to call while I am not available they would go to the voice mail. I would get a page on my pager; then I call the voice mail get the message and call the customer right back. My niche was free deliver. Being that I didn’t have a store front, my niche was a necessity. All that I had was a mail box service; which I
that address on all of my marketing martial.
One day my pager went off, and I got a voice mail from a man listing a list of items that he wishes to buy from me. He also said he was on his way to come pick them up!? I immediately called him back, and I realized I am talking to a man on a cell phone. (Back in those days a cell phone means he is wealthy)
I calmly said to him, “Sir I will be happy to deliver all your items to you with no cost to you.”
The man said, “That is ok, I am out for lunch and I am near. So, I will just come by!”
At this point I am close to panic mode. Inside I am thinking ‘keep it together’. I said to the man on the phone, “Sir not everything on your list is in stock, some of the items will be in this afternoon. So, if you like I can gather everything and drop them by your office first thing in the morning.”
The man said, “Oh No that is OK! I will just pick up what you have right now… I am just right around the corner from you. ”
My Brain said, “Time to panic!” Just when I was thinking that…
The man said, “I am right here. I am on Alton Pkwy and you are 5405 suite 121. I see 5405… is Mail Box Etc. Next to that is the grocery store Ralphs… Where are you? Are you at the back of the build!?
Boy O Boy! My mind was spinning. What do I say, should I say “Sir, walk straight into Mail Box Etc., all the way in the back wall. See that box with the number 121 that is me!?” What am I going to do?
I took a deep breath and I said, “Sir, I am just starting out with my business. Currently I am working out of my home, but I can ensure you that my merchandises are at the highest quality back with the best customer service.” I held my breath waiting to hear from the other end of the phone.
The man said to me, “That is OK! 15 years ago I started my company just like you, out of the home. Today I own my 2 story building, with 18 people in the office. You just bring all of my items to my office tomorrow morning and pick up your check.”
I never met the man, his office continue to order from my company until the day I sold my company. This man will forever be a big inspiration to me, my big break.
Tell me about your big break and why?
