Yes, You can!
Welcome back!
In 1962 Rick Hoyt was born with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and as a result Rick Hoyt has Cerebral Palsy. When Rick was eight months old the doctors told the Hoyts they should just put Rick away — he’d be a vegetable all his life. But Dick Hoyt and his wife didn’t believe the doctors. They could see Rick is inside that body, they could tell by the look in his eyes.
When Rick was 11 years old the Hoyts took him to the engineering department at Tufts University and asked if they could build a computer for the boy in order for him to communicate. At first they said “No way! There’s nothing going on in his brain.”
Dick said to them “Tell him a joke.” They did and Rick laughed. It turns out a lot was going on in Rick’s brain.
The Tufts University engineering team builds a computer that allowed Rick to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his head; Rick finally got his voice. What was his first word? “Go Bruins!”
When Rick was in high school a classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a 5 miles charity run for him, Rick said, “Dad, I want to do that.”
At the time Dick was a self-described “porker” who never ran more than a mile at a time, how is he going to push his son five miles? Still, Dick Hoyt tried and they finished.
That day changed Rick’s life. That night at home Rick said “Dad, when we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!”
That was all Dick needed to hear to keep running. Then somebody said, “Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?”
How’s a guy who never learned to swim and hadn’t ridden a bike since he was six going to haul his 110-pound son through a triathlon? Still, Dick Hoyt tried and he did.
Today Dick and Rick Hoyt had done hundreds of triathlons, including many grueling 15-hours Ironman.
A few years ago Dick had a mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found one of his arteries was 95% clogged. And the doctor said “If you hadn’t been in such great shape, you probably would’ve died 15 years ago.” So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other’s life.
In 2008 The Hoyt team was inducted in the Triathlon Hall of Fame.
When asked “what is the thing you would like to do most?” Rick answered, “Is that my dad would sit in the chair and I would push him once.”
“Yes, you can! You can do anything you want to do as long as you make up your mind. You can do it!” - By Dick and Rick Hoyt.

Giovanna, Thank you for the great message that they share with us. Look at the love that they have one for an other. If they had done what the doctor wanted them to do. They would not have this beautiful life. They took the challenge and ran with it and are doing it still. What a great blessing they are to all of us.

Giovanna, great story as always. So often we think doctors are gods and if they say we can or can’t, we take that as gospel truth. Yet the only person who can control my body is me. This is a good reminder.
Hi Deanna
When I saw this story, I just got the feeling that I must share it. It show us that we can do anything! Medical is one thing but, the human heart is another.
Thanks for stoping by and sharing your thoughts with us.
I am glad you enjoy the story

Hi Giovanna, I have read and watched the story about Rick and Dick Hoyt before, however when I read your article and watched the video, I still had the same feeling. My tears came to my eyes.
I learned something else from the story : the love of a father to make his children’s dream came true. The greatest love of a father, so they could through any obstacle.
Happy valentine’s day, Giovanna and thank for sharing the story.
It is so wonderful to see the obstacles that people overcome to bring happiness into others lives and to open up the doors for the rest of us to follow and learn from. What an amazing story of a family and the love and care they have for each other .
