Face your fear! You will to be rewarded.
Welcome back!
When I was in college, I had a fear of public speaking. And I decided that the only way I can prevent my fear from control me any longer is to face it head on. So I enroll myself in a public speaking class. First day of class I saw the video camera and the size of the group. I remember sweating, shortness of breath, feeling sick… It was bad. There was a part of me that thought, why wasn’t this easier for me? Shouldn’t my bravery be rewarded for stepping up on to face my fear? May be this is a mistake?
But then I said to myself, “If I quit now!? Speaking in public will forever be that monkey on my back.” I think to myself, “I can do this.” So I stayed. I gave a speech every week with the video camera on me. To make a long story short, today I am an inspiration speaker.
When I realized the purpose of my life is to inspire people with the message of Imperfect Action is better than No Action and to empower people to take Action with their life. Even though it may be an Imperfect Action, it is still better than No Action. We can’t wait for all the pieces to fit perfectly before we do something. Once I was clear about, this is what I should do. I decided blogging was the best way for me to start spreading the Imperfect Action message. The first though came to mind was the difficulty I would face with spell and grammar, and then comes fears…what if no one can read what I write? What if…? Then I think to myself, “How are you going to get better at writing, if you don’t write?” So, I started my blog and I have been blogging everyday ever since. I am happy to say, it has been a fantastic journey. Yes, I have misspell and grammar problems from time to time. Last month I wrote a blog post 7 steps to break free from perfectionism. Yesterday, I got the following comment:
Great steps! I’m looking forward to reading more on imperfect action.
It was very interesting to catch myself at the very beginning … the perfectionist in me almost stopped reading when I saw the typo in the title (which I have to assume was intentional) and I found myself losing focus on the message when I found other ones in the article.
Sometimes I get so lost in things being ‘right’ that I miss the value of the whole message! Thanks for the dose of introspection!

When we allow our fears to control us, we become like a scared animal. As human beings we possess the ability to overcome our fear. It’s one of the few traits that have allowed us to become the dominant species on this planet.
It’s okay to fail for any number of reasons. Sometimes things just aren’t meant to be. But when you fail due to your fear, that means that you are missing out on an experience, and failing by default.
Hi Trey
So true, it is our right to make mistakes. We can’t let fear stand in our way.
Thanks for your comment and you have added value to this post

Giovanna, Thank you for your nice article. I believe that we all need to face a fear, get out of comfort zone, and do what we do not want to do. But, it will be rewarded as you say. Today, so many “Too EZ Looks Like” stuff are around. But, no pain no gain, so to speak. Very inspirational. Thank you, again!
Wonderful, Giovanna!! Thank you.
Agreed, fear is a think that grows disproportionately in the dark of avoidance, but shrivels in the light of close inspection—but nobody said it was going to be easy. But oh the freedom and the power of tossing that monkey off the back.
blessings to you and all you hold dear,
CG
Good for you Giovanna that you had the courage to face your fears and overcome them!
Hi Shaw
We have earn what we want. Some time we get a free B, but the bottom line we have to go for what we want.
Great to see you here. Thanks for your comment and I enjoyed reading them.

Hi Gio .. yes fears are fairly terrible .. to get through .. I “hate” public speaking .. but practise makes perfect (or easier .. as I know you don’t like perfection!) .. I’m sure it came from my childhood when my father drilled me for reading the lesson in Church .. it was terrible (that word again) .. & that sealed my fate .. don’t talk in public!! I am practising though & I do self talk to get rid of my fears ..
Thanks again .. great post - Hilary - Be Positive Be Happy
Hi Hilary
We all have to do whatever that work to over come fear. Keep working on it and one day it wouldn’t control you any more.

We fear what we don’t know, and once we do it, how can their be anymore fear! I felt the same way with public speaking, and I took it head on, knowing it would be an incredible part of my business, a way to inspire others to a life of well-being.
I was told a long time ago that I feared failure because I had never failed at anything. As I paused and reflected to an extent that was true. Things always seemed to “go my way”. So when I entered new territory, I was afraid of a different course.
Failure isn’t failure unless you never try. Otherwise it’s a learning opportunity.
Yes, yes, and YES!
Very, very often part of my advice (regarding the issue of overcoming stage fright and fear of public speaking” is the good ol’ “Nike standby” - “JUST DO IT!”
Here’s the thing: when it comes to dreaming and daring to do, most people’s dreams and dares are not actually all that grandiose, and yet they defeat themselves with negative attitudes and beliefs before they ever get going. The reality is that most of the dreams and dares people have are actually quite achievable.
Sure, some hold unrealistic unattainable dreams - but my direct experience with my students and members is that in almost every instance, the dreams they have are not far-out, fantastic, unrealistic desires.
Overcoming fear of public speaking and stage fright is much, much easier than people think.
Best,
David Portney
I like your story and how it ties back to your manta - imperfect action is better than no action.
I’m a big believer in taking massive action … success really is a numbers game and you’re right, we can’t wait until we’re perfect. Our little journeys are our growth. I’m glad we start as saplings in different areas and don’t start out as old trees …it’s about the experience.

The easy things happen normally for you the harder it would be for you to have to face that you are great at something. Very true.

Hi Giovanna!
Great article! We as humans do fear SO much. For me the greatest thing I can think of was spiders. It was a silly fear really because I just didn’t like them for whatever reason and would act out in fear if one was around. This was as your example quite paralyzing and so I decided to just face it and get it over with. So today it feels so much more freeing! Do I let them crawl on me, uh no, but I do not panic or feel distress anymore around them
In fact I am beginning to appreciate them more and more for the wonderful creatures they are.
Thanks for more inspiration!
Hi David
Yep! The bottom line is just do it, and once I started it just get better and better. Now I love what I do
Thank you so much for your comment, and your advice.

Hi Evita
That is a great story you got power over your spider fear. I myself don’t care of them much either, they just don’t look cute to me like a puppy. But you are right they are wonderful creatures, and they have a job to do with bugs

Hi Giovanna - Usually the first few steps we take in facing our fears aren’t very smooth! But that doesn’t mean we should stop before we reach our goal or that our courage won’t be rewarded eventually
Hi Amanda
You are so right about that, it wasn’t pretty..but it always turn out OK

Running away from fears will only make them stronger since what you resist persist in reality. In other words, the more you fight to refuse to accept a fear the more you make it present since that is where your focus is and what you focus on grows. If you seek to change a fear then you must dive head in and tackle it. The more fears you tackle, the more unconscious conditionings you rid of and in turn become remarkably more conscious.
I heard once that the real sense and meaning of the word FEAR could be broken down like this:
F=False E=Evidence A=Appearing R=Real
When I first heard that description of fear a long time ago, I said to myself “That seems to speak truth within me, but if fear is false then why does it seem so real?
I determined that real is just a sense (a belief, a perspective, a expectation, which gives rise to what is experienced), it means nothing “in and of” itself. Like a dream seems real while you are having it, until you wake up.
One way I use to understand fear, is by realizing it is the opposite of love.
Fear harms, closes down, contracts, draws in, hides, hoards, runs, destroys,
and grasps.
Love heals, opens up, expands, sends out, reveals, shares, stays, creates, and
lets go.
Knowing this, I find I automatically start choosing love naturally over fear. It also helps to keep fear in its place.
However, it’s all there to help us. It all comes back to love. However, fear is just an illusion. No fear is ever justified when truly faced.
When I was in school, there was this bully that would always pick on me. One day I was sick and tired of it and I was done with being scared all the time, I decided I was going to stand-up to him. I thought to myself, “It is better to get the crap beat-out of me, then to feel scared all the time. I might as well get it over with, I will know what to expect next time instead of expecting to feel scared.” Seemed logical to me at the time.
When I arrived at school, I was walking down the hall and I saw him by his locker. I knew if he seen me that he would start something and I already decided I was going to do something about it, so my heart was pounding out of my chest as I tried to hurry past him. He noticed me, he started walking down the hall beside me, nudging me with his elbow and taunting me. I stopped walking and faced him. Face to face, eyes to eyes, and I said “You got something to say to me!” with the most stern and assertive voice I could muster. I remember standing there, looking slightly up as I tried to keep my face aligned with his, and thinking to myself “Get ready for it, he is going to cause you a world of hurt!”. Yet that never happened, instead, using a voice that expressed attitude and cockiness, he said: “So what if I did, not like you would care what I had to say anyways.” As he walked away.
He never harassed me again and that was the last thing he ever said to me. However I felt disturbed by his statement. In fact, I felt more disturbed by that statement then I did the whole time he was bullying me. I could not make logical sense of why he would say that. Eventually it angered me. Of course! I don’t care what he had to say! Why would I after he has been mistreating me all this time?! What part of that doesn’t he understand!?
Consequentially though, it was me that didn’t understand. I didn’t understand that he was using fear (intimidating me) because he felt the fear that nobody cared what he had to say. He acted out in fear because fear was his perspective. I also didn’t understand that he was seeking to be heard (to be loved). If I knew what I knew now, I would have approached him while standing in love and listened to him. I could see that we perhaps would have became really good friends, which is all he wanted in the first place. A friend that would listen. How sad that he was not taught about the perspective of love, he would have found what he was seeking.
My fear of him was unfounded. Every-time I faced fear head-on without backing away, this has always been my experience. Fear (F.E.A.R.) stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. Can you see how the bully was in a perspective of fear, causing him to act out in fear, and instilling fear within me, all in the name of love? If your child is running towards a busy highway chasing a ball, what motivates you to run after the child and save them? Was it fear or love that caused that action to happen? It was the love for your child that stimulated the fear within you. Can you see how even fear (the complete opposite of love) is a twist of love? Love is all there is, love is the only answer to every question. Albert Einstein put it this way: “Where there is love there is no question.”
Thank you for the article and the opportunity to express myself through this comment.
Hi Nicholas
You are 100% right, if we run away from our fear. Then we are giving more of power to Fear, so we must take back our power by facing our fear.
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I enjoyed reading it very much.

Oh man, this is SO true. I’m sure many of us can think of countless examples where this has been the case, yet in the heat of the moment, it’s not always apparent. Thanks again for this!
Hi Ariel
In the heat of the moment, that is when a person decide to face their fear or to carry their monkey on their back another day!?
