How to make a decision in 2 second?

Welcome back!

decision-makingFrom time to time, each one of us will face situations where we have to make a decision to take a risk or not. And I have been asked over and over again this one question: “How can I make that decision?” My answer is “You just decide! “Your decision can be about:

Are you willing to let go of all your excuses and move forward with your life?

Are you willing to take that chance and go after you passion?

Are you willing to take the risk and start that business you have always wanted? Etc..

The answer is always interesting. Even though it should be a simple yes or no answer; people’s answers are often not that simple.

Over the years I have heard a lot of “Yes, I want to let go of my past, but …!” or “Yes, I want to start my business, but..!”

So why do people contradict themselves? Why do a person say,”yes, but!” I believe it is because when that person said, “Yes, but…!?” They honestly, have not made their absolute decision. A part of them knows they should take the risk because it is better for them. Yet they are hanging on what is familiar to them, even though it isn’t what they want.

Then the question becomes, “How does a person decide absolutely?”

It requires the person to be willing to let go of what he or she does not want. It is amazing how many time people hung on to what they say they don’t want. The moment you are willing to let go of that, then you are really to absolutely commit to your decision.

Second, it required a person to be in the now. Meaning when you make your decision ‘now’, you are deciding at this moment: Is this what I want? Don’t to be concern with the future and start asking how am I going to do…? When you decided, you will find a way. Haven’t you ever heard of when there is a will, there is a way!? Just decided!

What decision are you making today?

Hi Giovanna,
Very empowering post today. It has me thinking about if there are some decisions I should be making, and making absolutely.

Isn’t it funny how our “buts” always seem to get in the way? Making big decisions is simple and at the same time, incredibly difficult. I believe people can learn to build up their risk tolerance but by but by practicing on smaller things until they feel comfortable with the big ones. I will say I have a very big decision to make and I need to come to decision very soon.

Great post. Those 2 seconds decisions are always the right ones because that is the gut/heart answers. Once the “but” comes out the ego is involved, and everything gets fuzzy again. Thanks for the reminder to listen to our true answers!

Doing nothing can be a passion. Deciding not to decide is a decision. Every perception is meaningful.

I made the decision to visit you and I’m glad I did. I’ve used that beautiful photo in posts as well.
I love writing about decision-making and your advice is right on. It can be as easy as choosing what we want and following-through.

It often comes down to following your gut or your mind. The one that you allow to decide determines who you are. Risk-taker or safe path? A mix is a good way to of the two is a good way to go with a tilt toward risk.

Hi Giovanna. This is so true. And I’ve also experienced people (including myself) who are afraid to go for something in case they find it’s not the right thing for them. I would think it would be smart at least find out. That way if it isn’t right then, a person can move on to what is next instead of holding on to a maybe.

Good post, all the is needed is simply a cultivation of your inner awareness(meditation can get you there). You need to be able to distinguish a real feeling. If you feel it in your heart it will transform you because you will take action. If you become consumed by your feelings but only remains a feeling with no action, than you will know it is pseudo. You should not go against your heart; otherwise you are just a person who pretends.

Giovanna, good question. I’ve found a useful, simple way is to toss a coin, and in the 2 seconds before the coin falls, I usually know very strongly what I hope the outcome will be! Then I ignore the coin and just do what I really want deep inside anyway.

Great Post, Giovannna!

Sometimes we need to get the buts out of the way to move forward though.

Hi Lance
Great to see you :-)
I felt good writing this, if this helps one person to make an absolute decision. That would be wonderful.

Hi Dave
I love how you put it “build up the risk tolerance” and my favorite is “but by but practice on smaller things…to the big ones”

I’m a fan of just deciding for many things. You can always revisit your decisions later and ask if they’re working for you.

I find analysis paralysis can create enough friction to wear some of the best ideas down. Bootstrapping with enough quick decisions to get to action is key.

I remember one manager who would say, don’t spend $20 on a $5 problem (meaning don’t over-engineer decisions and waste more time than the value of the decision itself).

Alik Levin | PracticeThis.com says: 23 February 2009 - 12:11 pm

I liked especially “it required a person to be in the now”.
When I face a dilemma i try to figure out the losses for each decision and then the gain. The rest is a simple math ;)

Hi Gio .. Today I learned the YES .. I’ve always been able to make quick decisions, but (and that magic word again) not getting down to do the Yes - today I am changing the way I live.

Thanks - Hilary: Be Positive Be Happy

Great post Giovanna. It reminds me of the book Blink which is about trusting our instincts and first impressions. Self-doubt is crippling.

Giovanna Garcia says: 23 February 2009 - 5:20 pm

Hi J.D.

I heard the spending $20.00 on a $5.00 problem before myself and it is absolutely true. Quick decisions to action are the key to most things in life, as you said, “we can always revisit the decision.”

Thank you, for your comment and you has added more value to this post.

Isn’t it interesting that we tend to hang on to what is comfortable even when it can hurt us or we desperatly want something different?
