What was Warren Buffett like as a kid?

Welcome back!

185788308x_01_lzzzzzzz2Warren Buffett is Americans most beloved investor and the richest man in the world; his net worth is reportedly over $6.2 billion. When people think about success, Warren Buffett comes to minds for a lot us. Warren Buffetts success was no overnight. Warren is a man who took countless actions started at the young age of 6 years old.

The list of Warren Buffetts accomplishments is very long; today we are going to take a look of his early accomplishments. Warren Buffett was born in Nebraska August 30, 1930.

At 6 years old, Warren purchased 6-packs of Coca Cola from his grandfather’s grocery store for twenty five cents and resold each of the bottles for a nickel, pocketing a five cent profit. While other children his age were playing hopscotch and jacks, Warren was making money.

At 11 years old, Warren purchased his first stock. He purchased 6 shares of Cities Service preferred stock [3 shares for himself, 3 for his sister, Doris], at a cost of $38 per share. The company falls to $27 but shortly climbs back to $40. A frightened but resilient Warren held his shares until they rebounded to $40. He promptly sold them - a mistake he would soon come to regret. Cities Service shot up to $200. The experience taught him one of the basic lessons of investing: patience is a virtue.

At 13 years old, Warren filed his first income tax return, deducting his bicycle and watch as a work expense for $35 for his work as newspaper delivery boy. That year he also declared to a friend of the family that he will be a millionaire by the time he turns thirty, or “[I'll] jump off the tallest building in Omaha.”At 15, Warren is making $175 monthly delivering Washington Post newspapers. At fourteen years old, he invests $1,200 of his savings into 40 acres of farmland.

At 17, Warren was a senior in high school. Warren and a friend purchased a used pinball machine at a cost of $25. Buffett begins to think about the potential profit, and places it in a nearby Barber Shop. Within months, he owns three machines in three different locations. The business is sold later in the year for $1,200 to a War Veteran.

At 19, Warren graduated from college in only three years by taking his last three credits over the summer. His savings at that time was $9,800.

At 21, Warren purchases a Texaco station as a side investment. It didnt work out as well as he hopes. Meanwhile, he is working as a stockbroker. And he was teaching a night class at the University of Nebraska, “Investment Principles”. His students were twice his age.

At 24, Warren was offered partnership his starting salary was $12,000 a year.

At 26, Warren was out of college for six years and his personal savings have grown from $9,800 to over $140,000.

At 31, Warren made his first $1 million dollar investment in a windmill manufacturing company.

What I notice about the young Warren Buffett was; he was focus and clear in what he wants in life. He made decisions, took risks and most of all he took lots of actions. What did you notice about him?

Hi Gio .. thanks for that .. I learnt he continued learning all the time and reinvested his learning, his income - he was astute .. very astute .. he must have listened to his elders at lot at the beginning .. & he was patient while he learnt .. as well as the points you mention: he was focussed, took risks and made decisions & got on with ‘doing’ ..

Great information - Hilary: Be Positive Be Happy

Great time line and highlights!

I think this really shows what focus can do in terms of results. I think the key here is that it also shows business as his passion. While kids were playing, he was profiting. To each his own.

Hi Myrtle Beach Bum

It is meant to inspire people, to know that if we all start at Coca Cola making 5 cents, and keep at it. We can make a lot more over the years.

Hi Gio thank you for an inspiring post. I should tape a note to my computer “What would Warren Buffet do?” to keep me focused!

Trey - Swollen Thumb Entertainment says: 26 February 2009 - 9:08 pm

It is true, focus and action are both required. Success is unlikely if you only possess one. And as you know, Giovanna, the action doesn’t need to be perfect, as long as it’s related to your focus. Thanks for sharing about Warren Buffet. All of this was new to me!

Hi Diane

That is a great way to stay inspire is to look at things and ask yourselves what would your mentor do or say? :-)

Hi Trey

You got that right brother :-) All we need to do is get started to take action, and don’t even worry about being perfect or not.

Each person you meet or read about mirrors aspects of yourself through your emotional reactions. As you evolve to attune to how you feel, you learn to read energy and awaken the transferable skills you have always had. This deepens fulfillment in your physical existence. It is not measurable. The truth is only ever felt.

Gennaro says: 27 February 2009 - 12:39 pm

Thanks for this. I like Warren Buffett as a public figure. He remains humble despite being the second richest man in the world for years. He has also decided to start giving much of her wealth to charity through the Gates Foundation. THat’s two heavy hitters finally swinging the bat in the right direction.
