You are the Pencil.

Welcome back!

The Pencil Maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box.

“There are 5 things you need to know,” he told the pencil, “Before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be.”

“One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.”

“Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you’ll need it to become a better pencil.”

“Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.”

“Four: The most important part of you will always be what’s inside.”

“And Five: On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write.”

The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

You are the Pencil!

Always remember:

One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow other human beings to access you for the many gifts you possess.

Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various problems in life, but you’ll need it to become a stronger person.

Three: You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.

Four: The most important part of you will always be what’s on the inside.

And Five: On every surface you walk through, you must leave your mark. No matter what the situation, you must continue to do your duties.

Allow this parable on the pencil to encourage you to know that you are a special person and only you can fulfill the purpose to which you were born to accomplish.

Don’t get discourage, remember that you have great significant to the world and you got a job to do.

This was sent in form one of our readers Rachel M. and I decided that it is such a great story and I have to share with everyone.

Thank you, Rachel M. and I hope you all enjoy the story.

Hi Giovanna, Thank you for your inspirational post. Yes, it is very profound article as usual. It is important to know what we are and decide from there. Thanks again.

That is one powerful allegory - very powerful and catchy too.
Taking away with me these: “sharpening” and “what’s inside”.
This one was really really good one!
It surprised me - a good thing ;)

Hi Gio .. thanks .. yes the pencil needs people to help it express its views, to assist others; it has a life time; it can take a rest and restart after evaluating its ‘failures’ - they become eradicated; your core is so important - be true; and finally just quietly make your mark and develop your self.
Thanks Gio .. an interesting aspect to think about ..

Hi Giovanna,

Such a clever story! I love the analogy!

This story is coming to me at a funny moment, but in a good sense. A few days ago, I recently started writing with a pencil. I hadn’t written with a pencil since…I can’t even remember! lol Now, as I write and erase with my pencil, I’ll be reminded of this Inspirational story! Thank you so much for sharing this, both you and Rachel M.

Many Blessings….

Very clever and meaningful analogy, Giovanna. I love the picture - it helps to ground the story in my head!

I certainly “get it”, very clever story. It reminded me of Marianne Williamson’s poem “Our deepest fear”.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

You have a very inspirational blog Giovanna.

Cheers

Hi Shaw

If we know what we are, than we can better work with what we got. And we can always make adjustment from there.
Thank you for your comment.

Hi Robert

Most important things in life are so easy yet so hard… But we have to allow ourselves to trust even if it is hard. How else would we ever find out.

Hi Giovanna,

What great lessons from a pencil! I love it! #4 is my favorite - what’s inside is most important. How often do we get caught up with the external and neglect what’s inside? Something that’s always good to be reminded of….

John Wiskur says: 7 March 2009 - 10:57 am

Another classic for us to grasp to in our journey in life. We always leave an impact in some ones life so we must be wise and careful in what we leave with that person. We as pencils write that script. As you did to me at the seminar a couple of weeks ago. Thank you again.

Hi Lance

I like to be reminded of #4 myself as well. The outside is just the wraping paper, the inside is the real thing :-)

Great story and I liked the (pencil) points you drove home.

I think a related point is that the pencil knows it’s a pencil and not a pen, so it doesn’t have pen envy. Instead, just be the best pencil it can. There’s a lot to be said for that.

Giovanna Garcia says: 9 March 2009 - 8:52 am

Hi J.D.

Cheers to being the best pencil :-D Thank you for your comment and sharing your wisdom with us.
