How to keep your Job and your business alive?

Welcome back!

mpj038542400005b15d3

Recently I heard people saying: “My Company owes me more as an annual pay raise. After all, I put in my eight hours a day.” Or “My boss are not being fair, why did he cut back my hours instead of cutting back Sue. I have been here longer.”

Where did this Entitlement disease came from? I guess for me as a Chinese Woman, I was never taught that I was Entitle to anything. As a little girl, my grandmother would tell me stories of little Chinese baby girls buried alive or abandoned. It was because China was a farming culture and farmers need man power, therefore, women were not as valuable.

So my grandmother taught me that I was lucky to be alive and that if I was going to make it in life it was going to have to be my doing. Subconsciously I felt that to continue to be alive I have to be useful and contributing values; I have to earn my life! That is my foundations, my principle for life.

When I got my first job, I knew that I have to let my boss know that I would be the best employee she would ever ask for…and I was! I also knew that if I want to keep my job, I had to produce more for her than anybody else…and I did!

Sometime I see people showing up at their work place with a minimalist attitude. You know what!? If that is the case, your boss only needs to do the minimal for you as well. And when it is time to trim the fat, who do you think is his top pick.

When I was an employee I had always have great bosses (other than that one case of discrimination.) And when I became the employer I have the best employees working with me. I always give 100% and people around me do the same as well. We desired each other.

So if you are worry about your job or your business due to the current economic situation. Let me remind you, this is not the time to feel sorry or be depress and do the minimal. This is the time you need to give 110% to earn it! Whatever you do, do it so well that your boss or your customer would think twice before choosing someone else over you. Let other people be the fat, but not you!

I agree with you, results is the best way to survive. But is it working hard or working smart?
Doing things is not the same as getting results. I think to survive in today’s economy one needs to be super efficient - not only effective. That way you get not 110% but much more.
Good reminder, Giovanna! ;)

Hi Alik
I absolutely agree with you we have to be efficient to be able to give 110%.

Hi!
Great post! Enjoyable read+informative=awesome!
Where I come from the phrase “I deserve it” is part of the lingo and I find it very frustrating! I agree that it can be limiting. Not to mention that when you feel you’re not getting what you deserve you’ll “fight” in all the wrong ways to get it (backstabbing, badmouthing bad…) instead, as you suggested, being better and earning it!

Hi Jack
That is right we want to come from a place of positive, be better at what we do and earn it.
Thank you for you rcomment and sharin your thoughts with us.

Hi Giovanna, I love your attitude! And I loved your personal sharing about your ethnicity and what your grandmother taught you. Your blog is starting to get more personal and I feel that I’m knowing you better as a person and really liking you! I also have great admiration for your writing an English blog though it’s not your first language - and you get your points across so well despite that. I cannot imagine writing Chinese language blog though I’m supposed to know Chinese :)

By the way, is Craig any relation to you? Just prying I guess, no need to answer!

Hi Gio .. the world is delivering a few shocks to people .. none of us deserves anything unless we earn it .. we need to really adjust our thought processes .. and take responsibility for our own lives.

Thanks for the thoughts - so appropriate now & you’re a great example to us.

I think that’s a very powerful principle and it’s a strong foundation.

Entitlement is a herring and a trap. The world’s not fair, and that’s good and it’s bad — it all depends on what you make of it. You’re right … if you want something, make it happen. Don’t sit back and wait for the Entitlement Fairy to take care of it for you.

As Kid Rock said, “You get what you put in and people get what they deserve” I’ve grown to appreciate that quote more and more in my adult life. Thanks for the reminder to stay valuable, Giovanna!
