Donald Trump the famous New Yorker - Real Estate Mogul.

donaldtrump3His outspoken and flamboyant personality has made him the favorite of the press since the 80’s. Trump’s multiple marriages and divorces were regular tabloid fodder. On and all, Trump’s image is all about being successful. When people think of him, people think of a Deal-maker, a powerful successful business man.

Regardless of what some may say about his marriages or his personality, the bottom line is Donald Trump is a brilliant business man. The reason he is brilliant mostly because of how he deals with setback and his ability to rebound.

In 1990 Trump found himself over $900 million in debt and he had to declared business bankruptcy.  He was forced to relinquish his airline, shuttle and his pride and joy - his largest Manhattan real estate parcel. After he was forced to sale his land in Manhattan, Trump have the brilliant idea to leverage his expertise in Manhattan real estate and in construction; by offer to his service to the new land owner. Trump offer to oversee the construction in the Manhattan site, in exchange for a cash fee and a portion of future profits.  As a result, by 1994 Trump made enough money to repaid $3.5 billion dollar of his business debt.

In 2004 Trump filed for Chapter 11 for Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, trying to restructure his almost 2 billion dollar in debt. Trump once again has the brilliantly idea for rebound by leverage his fame; he host and produce his own realities show “The Apprentice”. He was paid $50K per episode for 1st season; quickly it went up to $3 million per episode.

The point of the story is: It is not what happens to a person, it is how well a person can deal with setback and the ability to rebound. From time to time we are going to have to take a hit here and there and we have to be able to get back up, find a way to turn it around again and again.

Hi Gio .. I suppose it says it doesn’t matter what we think .. it’s what he thinks and is doing and his life .. just lets get on with our own .. & learn from his dedication to hard work & his expertise - this applies to his own life, and also to his business knowledge.

Do your own business - work and learn from your own mistakes … take advantage of the opportunities that arise ..

Thanks - good post - Hilary: Be Positive Be Happy

Whoa, $900 million in debt, and we think we have problems! I think I’m learning that if I want big money, I have to accept big problems, and vice versa. ;)

Jay says: 9 March 2009 - 6:48 am

Trump is amazing in buisness! I thought I needed to work on my debt but I am no where near 900 million so I will wait it out a little longer. :-)

Giovanna,
Good article! Yes, the “Don” had a wonderful attitude about failure and success and the integral relationship of the two. I heard once that he and his son passed a homeless person on the street and Mr. Trump said to his son, that man has more money than I do, he was eluding to the massive debt that he had compared to the man who had no debt and a few sheckles in his cup.

Hi Mark

That is a good one :-) about Donald and his son passing the homeless man. That is so true the wealthy have more then the homeless, at the same time the wealthy also have more wealth then the homeless.
Thank you for the comment and sharing that story with us.

I think personality goes a long way. You have to add talent to it, but that combination is a recipe for success. Trump has it. Like him or hate him, people pay attention.

Peter Levin says: 9 March 2009 - 2:51 pm

Hi Giovanna,

I don’t like Trump that much, but I respect him and therefore have read several of his books :) I guess you don’t have to like someone, but you can respect him any way

That is another example on how mind of successful people works. I am sure that he can lose everything now and will get it back fairly soon

As Brian Tracy said something like: Someone can go through custom and mention that Has Nothing to Declare. It is enough to have mind to become anyone we want to be. Ability to overcome adversity and look at them as stepping stones, not roadblocks separates winners from non winners :)

Nothing matters if you are not fulfilled

Giovanna Garcia says: 9 March 2009 - 2:55 pm

Hi Gennaro

Good point, Trump does have a huge personality and it totally works.

A famous Russian said years ago that America will always be strong and will survive because of our bankruptcy laws. Understanding that a death of a business will spring new life-just like life and death of plants and animals. Its a unwritten law of Gods ways and is applied to business dealings as well. The sin is not that he failed but if he does not get up and try again. That is what leaders are and do. Hats off to him as he knows those principles well.

It’s amazing how much that guy has comeback. Seriously.

Hi Peter

You are right about we don’t have to like someone to respect them. Brian Tracy is a great inspiration, and his lessons are very true and powerful, “Ability to overcome adversity and look at them as stepping stones, not roadblocks separates winners from non winners” Thank you for that one.
