What ever happen to commitment?
Welcome back!

My friend Julie came visit me last week. We were catching up on what has been going on in each of our lives. And Julie shared with me about her sister Lilly who got married a year ago. Lilly had a big ‘Fairytale Wedding’ and her parents had to take a loan to pay for this big joyful event. Now, a year later Lilly is considering filing divorce with her one year husband. When Lilly was asked for the reasons of the divorce, Lilly said: “We are just not having fun anymore, and we don’t like doing the same things, so we live two separate lives.” Julie was upset about her sister Lilly, Julie said, “What happen to commitment!?”
What did happen to most people’s commitment?
Some people got married thinking that when they stepped through that wedding arches with the beautiful flowers, they will automatically have a beautiful marriage. They wake up every morning smiling and care free like a Disney Musical.
Some people have a new year resolution, they joined the best gym. The spend more time choosing the right gym than they actually do their exercises in there. These people think that they are going to get the new body of their dreams, because they have membership at the best gym.
Then, there are those who try their hands at Entrepreneurship, they think that they really want their own business. Therefore, it must work…Right!? Yet, for some reason they never seems to have enough time in the day to do all task they know they should have gotten done. However, when these same people were employed they would most likely finished all of their daily task at work .
I would boldly say that all three groups above, would tell you that they are committed. They are committed : to their marriage, to their exercises program and certainly to their own business. So, what is happing here? Are people just unclear on the meaning of commitment? My definition of commitment are: Being clear on the vision of what I want, pledged to continuously to take actions toward that vision. Giving it my best, my very best!
I am well aware of the fact that marriages do fail, weighs don’t always come off and entrepreneurships doesn’t always succeed. What I am talking about is nothing in life ever just happen, if we want a good marriage, a better body or a business. We have got to take actions and do the work. There is no magic arches that we can just walk through. We have got to do our part, at the end of the day that is all that is require of us.

Hi Gio .. commitment means honouring yourself, while proceeding towards your decided goal or goals .. if there are two or more things going on .. these commitments/goals are over and above your normal life .. your daily duties and commitments .. ie you need to work extra hard, practise extra long .. just do it - however look after yourself too .. but remember your committed goals - just honour yourself.
I heard a phrase that helped me and released me from trying to do more than I could do - now I just am committed and will honour the three important things I need to do - two caring and one my business success: “Listen to our Higher Self - it is guiding you towards your destiny” ….. I hope this helps others ..
Thanks - Hilary: Positive Letters

I really enjoyed your post - thanks!
Success is achieved through action…and not giving up when it looks like we’ve “failed.” In that case, we need another approach… and then commit to more action. And as you say, even if that action is imperfect it’s better than no action.
Giovanna,
I have a huge problem with commitment. I like to travel light and commit to as little as I can in life. While I don’t think this is wrong and is an equally free and happy way to live, it does mean that I don’t experience the rewards of deep commitment. Good food for thought.
Hi Giovanna,
I think the problem is that people want results fast without doing the necessary work. Marriage is a great journey but I think people expect more from marriage due to what they see in the movies. Life is a journey and it all boils down to attitude. You get out of life as much as you put into it!

Hi Daphne
I have the feeling you achieved a lot in your life with a lot of actions, just take a look at your nice blog. Your new site… You started something and you finished nicely. That is what I call commitment. We don’t have to committed to everything, I just want to send a message to those who take no action toward what they are committed to and therefore never finish… My message to them is: “It is time to take actions toward what you want.”

Hi Nadia
“You get out of life as much as you put into it!” I love it.
You hit the nail right on the head, people want the results without wanting to put in the work.
Thank you for your comment, I enjoyed reading them and I look forward to reading more from you.

Giovanna, I love the word “commitment”. It seems to be a word that most people have forgotten nowadays. Everyone is after the quick and easy result. Nobody wants to work hard for anything. They expected it to land in their laps wrapped up like a present just to be experienced. I said this in my latest blog post:
“Make Progress Every Day - Every day make sure you have at least one, but preferably three to six actions that you can complete that day that progress you towards your heroic goal. It doesn’t matter how small. Mind bending outcomes are often the result of a whole bunch of tiny steps. If you just write it down and think about it, then you will just be thinking about it. You must act now and act every day hereafter.”
If one of your goals is to have a wonderful marriage then you better take some positive action towards that goal or it will die.
Thank you for another wonderful thought.
I think many people are expecting things to be easy. They don’t realize they need to work hard to achieve their goals.
Hi Stephen
Commitment is one of ten favorite words. We have put work into what we want, if it is going to happen it is going to be happen because we took action toward it.

Giovanna,
I enjoyed your blog today — being committed to something doesn’t mean we have to “like” what we are doing all the time - but our character and integrity show forth when we take our commitments seriously. It may be easier to give up or give in, but in the end we won’t feel good about ourselves. Staying committed to some “one” or some “thing” is a great feeling.
Amen!
After getting married at 17 and pregnant I’ve been married for 37 plus years. I’m running a 1/2 marathon Sunday with one of my daughters and I’ve been very successful in all of my career endeavors. Yeah!
Now if I can apply this to my blog, Twitter etc I’ll be good to go. I’m so overwhelmed at times. Then I pull back and remember to blog for the joy of it.
A great topic, article needed and timely!
Hi Sue
You are so right - commitment doesn’t mean you get to sit back and enjoy the ride. It meant you do the time, do the work. Even if it isn’t fun.

You are so right. And if it makes you feel better, know that I’m committed like crazy to the love of my life since the day we met in 2000.
I like your point on continuously taking action towards the vision. That’s the key.
If there’s a lack of fun, it’s more than likely a lack of action. Sounds like some imperfect action would be the perfect recipe at least to start.
Hi, Giovanna,
My parents taught me the meaning of commitment as a child after they allowed me to get a pet. Yes, I had to care for the pet, pick up after it and pay for the expenses involved in having a pet…but the reward of having unconditional love made it all worth it. I learned to live in the moment.
It saddens me to see people think that their spouses are disposable, their children are disposable and their pets are disposable. If they had all learned to live in the moment, then the long term commitment would be a pleasure to cherish, not a burden to unload.
Thank you for the vision of commitment!

I have been in a relation and seriously thought everything will go like a fairytale but unfortunately everything was in a big mess. That was just because I thought I am committed and I have done everything to save this one. But after reading this I think I need to give a try and will be committed to it in a true sense. Thank you..
The ability to be commited to something separates success from failure in a lot of situations. Work, school, life will send your hurdles. You need to be connected and committed to what your doing to get over them.
Hi Gennaro

A commitment to action is key, whether that means sticking with the current plan or deciding to head in a new direction. In the end it really boils down to having a commitment to excellence, a passion to live our life with happiness and gratitude, and most of all respect for ourselves and others.
Hi Mark
You would be someone who know a lot about commitment to Action. I see you do that with your passion and your message of ‘Global Patriot’.
