Welcome back!

untitled

I received an email from our reader Jerry G. and in his email he wrote about his wish on publishing his first book. However, he hesitate on moving forward due to his lack of support from any traditional publisher. It is clear to me that this is holding him back. So this post is for Jerry G and anyone else who is thinking about self publishing.

The following are some very successful authors who self-published their first major book. They didn’t let anyone hold them back and they did not worry about what people think.

Tom Peters “In Search of Excellence” sold over 6 million copies. A books on management it is thought-provoking and fun to read. “A landmark book” ~ by Wall Street Journal. “Without question the most important and useful book on what makes organizations effective” ~ Warren Buffet.

John Grisham “A Time to Kill” than his second Novel  was “The Firm” and a long list of books to followed a combined total of over 250 million copies sold. If you have not read any of his book, you might have seen some of the movies based on his novels such as:  The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill, The Chamber, The Rainmaker… just to name a few.

James Redfield “The Celestine Prophecy” over one million copies sold in the U.S. alone. This book unveil the possibility of universal hope for all of humanity, through an ever increasing awareness of our self, others around us, and our natural world. He writes of special places where the energy which binds us all together is ever present, in sites such as mountains and old-growth forests.

Richard Paul Evans “The Christmas Box” over
seven million copies sold. A book helps grieving people to heal and lost souls to find their way home. Evans’s own spiritual journey and stories of people he encountered along the way — miraculous stories of healing and divinity .

Ken Blanchard & Spencer Johnson “One minute manager” sold  more than 13 million copies worldwide. It is ranks as one of the most successful management titles ever published. This book teach you the strategies of one-minute management to save time and increase productivities in business, home, and family.

If it is a book, a business or an invention… whatever your heart desire. All you need is one person to believe in you… YOU! If you believe you can, than you can. All you need to do is to take action.

Other well-known do it yourselfers: William Blake, Deepak Chopra, E.E. Cummings, Benjamin Franklin, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whiteman, Virginia Woolf, Carl Sandburg, Mark Twain just to name a few.

Don’t wait for anyone else’s approval, all you need is your own approval.

Hello Giovanna,

Thank you for your post + info. I did not know so many world wide known authors started their writing and publishing of their own. I love John Grisham, Mark Twain, Edger Alan Poe, etc… You are right there is no need for waiting for anybody’s approval. We need our own approval that’s all needed. Thank you again.

Hello Giovanna,
One of my goals in life is to publish a ‘well recieved’ book some day, it is refreshing to read that so many well known authors started without the help of the ‘big guys’. I have always believed that in order for someone to accomplish goals in life, especially the big goals, that the only one who needs to believe in them is themselves. I believe in me!
Thanks for the post.

Hi Gio .. thanks for the post about writing books .. there are lots of ways now-a-days to start off .. articles, newsletters, and can be delivered so easily over the net - all these can ultimately lead to a whole book ..

I’m sure you’ll have lots of readers who will be realising the opportunities they have to explore .. once again .. it’s imperfect action .. and now it’s Spring we can all spring into action!

Thanks for reminding us of where great authors start from ..

Gio, I love the photo of the girl leaping across the chasm! It captures what so many of us are trying to do in our lives. Great list of self-published authors too.

Hi Giovanna,

I used to think that there was a set way to being a success…regardless of the career. I then realized that there is no rule as to how to become successful. There is always a way…you just have to look for it and think outside the box. Self-publishing is a great example. Some of the people you mentioned, I knew about but there many that I did not know. Great post! :)

I really like your examples of incredible potential.

I think success is less about support from your publisher and more about support from your raving fans and a passion and belief in what you do.

Hi Darren
Those authors are well known, because they believe in themselves and self published.
I just love the sound of “I beleive in me!” You go after it, and one day you too will be well known.

Hi Giovanna,

I love this post! And it also makes me think more deeply about this idea I have for writing a book. And asking myself, what is holding me back? Seeing these “big names” here, and how they self-published, I’m assuming because a publisher didn’t pick them up - what great examples!

Giovanna Garcia says: 31 March 2009 - 7:34 pm

Hi Lance

I am happy to hear about you may have a book coming out soon. Don’t let anything or anyone hold you back, you should go for it.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts.

Hi Giovanna. It is encouraging to see the paths that so many others have already built. I guess we better get cracking if we are to leave a trail for those who come behind us. I’ve wanted to write a book since grade 5. I’m getting closer… an idea landed last week. Now I’m in the research and data collection, testing phase. Every journey begins with one step.

Giovanna Garcia says: 1 April 2009 - 1:53 pm

Hi Davina

I am so happy to hear that started your journey in fullfilling your dream of writing your book. All we need to do is one step after next. That is the way to reaching our dreams. Keep pressing on ward my friend. :-) Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts.
