How to age Perfectly Imperfect.

Welcome back!

untitled4Yesterday I got this Poem from our member Christy Nicholson Pearson at our Facebook Group “Imperfect Action is better than No Action.” Being that I just had a birthday last week, Christy’s Poem had extra meaning to me. In Christy’s message she didn’t mention who the author was or if this poem has a name. So for the time being, I am going to call this…

The joy of being imperfect.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, and my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend. I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed,
or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn’t need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon, before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60’s &70’s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love … I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day

(if I feel like it).

Thank You Christy Nicholson Pearson, you will find her on Facebook or you can check out her blog at Where Will You Go next?

What a beautiful poem.
You don’t need to be old or even considered such to appreciate what she writes.
Many of us are simply fortunate to be alive and living in comparative wealth and safety. There’s plenty to reflect upon in this poem and its positive stuff!

Thanks
Jens

Wow, this is an amazing creed. I want to be just like this person. All of it was good, though I found this part the most positive and uplifting. I just love this attitude!

“I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.”

And Gio, a belated happy birthday to you!

Hi Gio .. I love those stories .. we are what we are. Kids are so great .. they just say it like it is and get on with life - enjoying their growing, their learning and their love .. so should we all ..

Here’s to a happy future for us all -

Hi Giovanna,

Happy Belated Birthday!

What a great attitude! Good for Christy! I think we all can learn from her…no one is perfect and the sooner we accept that fact…the happier we will be!

I’ve always admired people that age gracefully.

Some people are like wine and get better with age. Some people fight the natural course and I think it backfires. There’s a lot to be said for both making the most of what you’ve got and for making the most of the situation.

Giovanna, I loved it.

“As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong.”

and

“So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day ”

What a wonderful attitude towards her life!

Giovanna,
Happy birthday. I wish I could lie and say I don’t mind aging but I do. If it’s possible to love life but dislike aging that’s where I’m at. My parents are 88 and 89 and it’s sad to have to watch them lose their freedom. However I know it’s part of life and we all must die yet I still don’t like it. Thanks for allowing me the space to be honest.

Hi Tess

I understand what you mean about watching your parents…
The things is no one situation is good all the way around. Yes, we may lose some of our freedom; but we also gain more memories, wisdom, love etc…
My fear of ageing would be - if I loss my mind.
Thank You for your comment and I love your honesty.

Hi Giovanna,
What a great message in this poem. The whole idea that we can be “ourselves”, be real - is liberating. I’m getting there…as I age.

Happy Birthday, my friend!!

Giovanna Garcia says: 31 March 2009 - 7:29 pm

Hi Christy
Thank you for sending me this. As you can see many people are enjoying the message and it doesn’t matter that you are not the author :-) Thanks for the Birthday wish and your comment.

Hi Lance
We are all getting older everyday, we just need to get wiser along the way. Take ourselves as who we are, however perfect or imperfect we may be.
