one-feather

Last weekend I gave an inspirational speech in front of a group of entrepreneurs at a Jeffery Combs Event. After my speech many people came up to speak with me. Two people asked me two questions that I felt it would be a value for me to share here.

A gentleman name Jim asked “When you first started your business, what gave you the courage to make cold calls. Why were you not scare?”

A young lady name Christine asked “What was the darkest moment in business for you?”

The following was my answer to each of them:

To Jim,

“I came from misguided parenting. My father was in the military back in Taiwan and he was the officer who break and discipline soldiers. Let just say, he used his special skill on me, and because I wouldn’t ‘fall in’ my father kept escalading. I remember once my father put one hand around my neck and pressed up against the wall. Then he lifted his arm and my entire body was off the ground, suspend by my father’s hand around my neck pressed up on the wall. My feet dangle in the air. Another time, my father locked me in a small storage closet with rats and he removed the light bulb before he leaving me inside. I could go on… the point is when I thinking about things like that it making cold calling nothing to be scare about”.

To Christine,

“My darkest moment was when I attempted suicide. I took a bottle of sleeping spills with alcohol and  Woke up in a hospital. That was my darkest moment. In business I had a few very bad moments, some close calls. But nothing was darker than that one day”.

All of the blessing in my life, came from all the obstacles and challenges I came up against. Each time I encountered an obstacles, I gain one feather.

One feather at a time we earned and these feathers begin to turn into wings. The more challenges -the more feathers; and the wings gets bigger and stronger.

Than we can fly over anything.

Giovanna,

This was an incredible post, and I’ve just Stumbled it. I can’t believe you attempted suicide once. You are so full of life on this blog! Guess it’s the dark that makes the light shine through. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself and helping others to know that they too can make it.

Hi Daphne

That was almost 17 years ago. I have grown so much that I can’t even understand how my brain would work like that. But it did at that time. I think it is because I made it past the darkness and that gave me the feathers to for my wings today. I am very bless to have over come, and from time to time when my story is needed I don’t mind sharing. If I felt that it could help someone.
Thanks for your comment and the stumble.

Giovanna,
Incredible. The courage you demonstrate to share what you share… from the heart, is inspirational and empowering. I can sense that there is little you fear and little that you will allow to get in the way of your dreams and aspirations.

I appreciate also the comment contributions you have made on my blog… I am adding you to my blog list.

Stay true to yourself,
Regards,
Darren Sproat

Giovanna, my instinct is to say I’m sorry for your obstacles, but then I take your advice and realize that your experiences are what made you the unique you. Without them we would have the you we now have! Congratulations on what you have achieved and thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I seriously like your feather at at time to grow wings metaphor.

I see you turning your life lessons into results and helping others find their path forward and I think that’s great. It’s too easy to become a victim or blamer or fall into learned helplessness. Instead, you stand strong when tested and you help others do the same. Best of all, you have a gift and you share it freely.

Hi J.D.

I am glad you like the one feather at a time, when I told that to Christine her eyes light up. I believe it made an impact with her.
I am more powerful because of all that had happened to me, and my work is help more people understand that what happened to them can help them be more powerful not a victim.

Hi Giovanna,

I am so happy that you managed to transcend your past and achieve what you wanted. That is very inspirational. You should be proud of yourself because not everyone takes such painful events and learn from them. You go, girl! :)

I love the one feather at a time analogy. I’ve been flying for some time now. Hence the name of my book, Flying By The Seat Of My Soul.

I love the analogy of the feather!

Cold calling does take courage and the ability to understand and accept rejection. I have coached cold calling for years and it is amazing how well people can do in the right mindset and with the right skills.

I really appreciated the sincerity of this post. What came up for me was how the experiences you describe can actually be gifts, as hard as it can be to see that, because they’ve made you such a courageous person.

Hi Gio .. you amaze me - but it also tells me what the human will take - most of us are so lucky that we will never remotely have your experiences .. they are eye opening when we realise that your parents are here now with you in the States - albeit at other sides of the continent: it makes our challenges very small.

Thank you for sharing those terrible times with us .. no wonder you go cold at the thought ..

Now you’re happy - thank goodness - and we bless the gods that be - that sent us into your life -
