What your family really want is quality time and love.

Welcome back!

five_love_language_quality_time

I know of a Grandmother name Peal who is caught in the economic Strom, she is under a very strict spending limits. Just about every dollar she has is accounted for. Grandma Peal has not seen her family since January when all her families went to visit her. When Peal was asked why she did drive to visit any of her family. Peal said it is because she didn’t have the extra money for gas.

Finally, over the  past Weekend, Peal when to visit her family. Peal went bearing gifts to visit her sons, daughters and grand kids. Peal give expensive collectible gift to each person including her baby grandson. Peal gave him a pricey decorative  Easter basket figure.

When I learn of this; I can’t help but to wonder, if Peal didn’t spend her hard earn dollar in the luxury gifts. May be she could have use the money for gas and go visit her family more often. Peal is from a school of thoughts that elder shows there love by the gifts they give. Peal have this idea of a Grandmother’s perfect visit with her family. With the perfect gifts, taking the perfect family photo…etc.

What I like to share with Grandma Peal is that, her Grandson is not going to care about having the keepsake that he is most likely never allow to play with. On the other hand her Grandson is going to remember playing with Grandma, and the feeling of love only a Grandma can give.

Grandma Peal if you are reading this, listen to me as I tell you what I believe is the true and believe me I meant no disrespects to your school of thoughts and its value.

1. Children just want your time and that is how they could tell that you love them. They really don’t know that they need a baby’s first… The only people who care about that are the merchants.

2. Times are changing and in this changing time we are once again taught the real value about life. Yes, it was nice when we all can have luxury gifts. I am sure your sons and daughters appreciated them. However, I am certain that they would appreciate spending time with you which is priceless and it is not for sale.

3. Whatever idea you might have for a perfect family visit. May I suggest an Imperfect family visit is better than No Visit. I am sure your family would agree to choose to see more of you and forget the gifts.

Having we all know someone like Peal, giving gifts instead of time. Don’t buy into what the merchants tell you. What your family really want is quality time with you and to feel your love. In the end that is what we are all going to remember, how we make each other feel…not what gifts we got.

Hi Giovanna,

This is so true. In the end all that matters is love and memories are based on love. Excellent post! :)

I completely agree that an “imperfect visit” is better than “no visit.” No family (or family visit) is perfect, but spending time with family is so important and most of us don’t do it enough. Time is so much more important than gifts or cards or even phone calls. We should all try to spend a little more time with the ones we love.

Too true!
When my parents moved next to me, I felt great relief. I can now visit them every day, my kids see their grannies every day. Joy.

Hi Gio .. yes - Granny Peal I expect just wanted to live up to their expectations .. I think in some ways the proverb .. “pride comes before a fall” .. goes well here - Granny Peal definitely did not need to buy presents .. and now she has much less than before - she’s also deprived herself of her pleasure .. of visiting her family. However we should all think of others .. and her family could have driven over and seen her or collected, or paid for a taxi collection .. we don’t think do we??

Thank you for Granny Peal ..

Peal is a wonderful grandmother and mother to her family. I do hope everything works out for Peal in the end - family and financially.

I sent your URL to a client - I think she will benefit tremendously from reading your blog. :)

Have an awesome day!!

The greatest gift to give is our presence and love! It is this gift that will be remembered when all the other gifts are long forgotten.

Their are many that I would love to spend more time with, but can not because they are long gone from this world. It is a blessing to give whatever form it comes in. If it is a gift or our time. Both are gifts. Give the best gift of all. “YOU” Right now it sounds like she has little in the way of funds. Now is the time to give the gift of time. Share it with her loved ones. We never know how long someone will be with us. Lets not waste the gift of time. It is precious. Maybe she does not value herself as highly as she values the expensive gifts that she gave. Where she is far more valuable than anything that she could ever buy, no matter how expensive they might be. Thank you Giovanna for sharing with us.

This is true however I think parents are bigger culprits than grandparents. Parents fear telling their children no. They over work to buy things they don’t need all the while spending time away from then. They buy more and spend more out of guilt.

Hi Hilary

Good point, I am not sure what the story is behind the gas money and why no one help her out with that!? If I see this family again, may be they will tell me.
