Chinglish Lesson.

Welcome back!

chinglish-727771

What is Chinglish? Chinglish is a language that is 50% Chinese and 50% English. Chinglish is Marketing and Branding at it best! So, you might be thinking to yourself ‘What’?

To begin with, let me start by telling you a little story.

When I was twenty years old I got fired. I was working at Hotel front desk, and one day the new General Manager told me I was fired, because no one can understand me. Now three days before that, this GM had brought me this new hire for me to train, of course at the time, I didn’t know she was my replacement. I was crushed to be fire. My thought was I am a foreigner; of course no one can understand me. Then I had an epiphany ‘if the Hotel had such a problem communicating with me, why would they have me train the new hired!?’ So it is not entirely true that no one can understand me. I came to realized that it is because I don’t speak English, I speak Chinglish. And that my English might never be perfect, so, there is a good chance that this will happen to me again and again.

Now the Entrepreneur sprit in me stated to work on this little so called issue. I ask myself the question, “Can I market this? Can I market Chinglish?” I decided that I was going to own the word Chinglish, every time I speak with someone and if there is ever a moment that they need to clarify what I said. With a big smile on my face I would simply say to them, “O, I see we have just started to work together. So, you have not learned Chinglish yet. As we work together longer, you will learn how to speak Chinglish too!”

Soon Chinglish grown into a part of my branding; people know me as the girl who speaks Chinglish. I have giving speeches on Chinglish, and they are always well received. Many times I have people from all ethnicity came to me and said they want to learn how to speak Chinglish too! It is because of what Chinglish stand for.

What can we all learn from all of this? Chinglish is the triumphant victory of taking an Imperfection and turning that into a marketable brand. I understood at an early age that someone somewhere will always say: You are too tall, you are too short, you are too fat, you are too thin, too smart, too dump…you will always be too something to someone.

So why not claim it! Instead of giving up your power to those who are going to tell you that; “You are too…” You can own it! Take your power back. What you are hiding can be use to empower you. It can even become your brand.

I am giving Chinglish Lesson, who wants in?

Hi Gio .. I love your comment ‘oh I see we have just started working together’. Amazing thought .. thank you .. you really do teach us so much with your Chinglish.

I know my challenge .. now I don’t need to ponder that it’s tough on others .. it’s my attribute and I can use it, will use it, am using it - it’ll give me strength .. I’m in

Hi Giovanna,

In Singapore we speak ‘Singlish’ which is Singaporean English with totally different grammar and a unique vocabulary compared to English. It’s good to be proud of your roots, and accept imperfection. I do think it helps to master a language though, and be able to use both Chinese and English fluently. Just my view though.

Hi Giovanna,

Having spent the last four years in Korea, I will probably go back home later this year and start being corrected on my ‘Konglish’ the equivalent term for Korea, so I’m afraid I am going to have to pass on those ‘Chinglish’ lessons!

Having not heard any Chinglish in the past, I am not in a position to make informed comment about Chinese/English, but with Konglish, any native English speaker applying a dose of common sense should be able to understand what the Korean/English speaker is trying to say anyway. I have personally grown used to it and don’t see it as a big deal.

Also, I must say that however you speak, your writing certainly reflects full fluency and a complete grasp of the English language.

Hi Giovanna,

You know that I love all your posts but this one was absolutely what I needed to read this morning. Thank you so much for showing us all how to take a so-called “disadvantage” and turn it into our advantage. You should be really proud of yourself for being able to do that…not many would. :)

Positively Present says: 15 April 2009 - 5:51 am

This is very interesting. I had never heard of “Chinglish” before today. Like Nadia said, I really appreciate reading about how a negative (or perceived negative) can be turned into a postive. Thanks for the uplifing post!

Good move - make your “weaknesses” into your strengths! Use your opponent energy to win. The Aikido way! I liked it. ;)

You get lemons and make lemonade with it.
I am glad to see you didn’t get depressed over it and start like an argument.

In the end, you are here to please yourself, not others, so it is about finding those who will fit YOUR criteria

That’s a great reminder of how a difference can be turned into a weakness or a strength.

I like what you’ve done with Chinglish.

Hi Giovanna,

Thank you for an interesting post on your experiences! There is a good and bad side to everything! Maybe getting fired was a good thing in the long run….it brought out the fighter in you. It is hard to keep a good woman(or man) down!

You are AWESOME.

Hi Giovanna, In addition to the training today, this was great story. This is real “Reverse Strategy” to change the weakness to the strength. I myself speak Jinglish. So, it is very encouraging. The winner this time will lose next time not because of his weakness, but because of his strength. The loser this time will win next time not because of his strength, but because of his weakness.

Thank you for your sharing.

To encourage others to expand their learning curve is a meaningful initiative. English also combines with other languages. Chicanas is a version of French and English used in Atlantic Canada.

Stacey / Create a Balance says: 15 April 2009 - 5:01 pm

When I lived in Israel for a year, I spoke Hebrish. Most people were forgiving. I have a really poor memory and often make up words for (English) words I can’t remember how to pronounce. Some people think I’m crazy, but it works for me.
