Day 1
I walk down a street and there’s a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. It takes forever to get out. It’s my fault.

Day 2
I walk down the same street. I fall in the hole again. It still takes a long time to get out. It’s not my fault.

Day 3
I walk down the same street. I fall in the hole again. It’s becoming a habit. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Day 4
I walk down the same street and see the deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

Day 5
I walk down a different street.

realtina_turnerIn 1939 a little girl name Anna Mae Bullock was born and when she was 10 years old her mother abandoned her. Then at 13 years old her father left as well. Anna Mae was raised by her sister, her cousins and her grandmother. When Anna Mae was 17 she met Ike Turner and his band ‘Kings of Rhythm’. Anna Mae began to hang around Ike and his band. When Ike realize that Anna Mae would make a necessary part in his quest for international stardom, Ike married her and he changed her name to Tina Turner.

Ike and Tina toured successfully throughout the decade, including in England, where they toured with the Rolling Stones. In all appearances, the Turner couple were a resounding success, both personally and professionally. Unfortunately, they hid a dark secret: Ike was excessive with alcohol and drugs, domineering and violent with Tina. As a result Tina was frequently beaten by Ike, Tina had a broken nose and she had attempted suicide.

In 1976 after a violent argument right before an appearance in Dallas. Tina abruptly left Ike, fleeing with nothing more than $0.36 and a gas card. She spent the next few months hiding from him while staying with various friends.

Tina would later credit it was her newfound Buddhist faith, that gave her the courage to strike out on her own. Because she walked out on Ike in the middle of a tour, Tina was legally responsible for the all of the debts incurred by the canceled tour as well as a significant IRS lien. Needing to earn a living, she became a solo performer, supplementing her income with TV appearances.

After her divorce was finalized Tina Turner openly accused Ike of years of severe spousal abuse rampant drug addiction in her autobiography ‘I, Tina’. Which was made into a movie ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ Tina might walked away with only her stage name , 36 cents and a gas card. However, everything was worth it for Tina, in order for her to regain her dignity, her freedom and her life.

From touring with the Rolling Stone to 36 cents in her pocket, Tina Turner rise again better than ever with her head held up high.

Never settle for less than what you are worth, do the right thing and have faith that it will work out for the better. As long as you take Action to do something about it and you will win in the end.

Giovanna, thank you for all the good information on Tina Turner. She has done well for herself since Ike Turner. It is good that she had the strength and courage to do whet needed to be done. Many in this same position can not do that. Some end up dead at the hand of the spouse. Thank you for this great story.

Hi Giovanna,

Interesting - I didn’t know about her background in terms of being abandoned by her parents. She certainly has done a wonderful job of overcoming her obstacles.

She has a wonderful singing voice and the world was so much better for her refusal to give up on her dream.

She is - “Simply the Best.”

Wow! I had no idea this happened to Tina Turner. Very inspiring and encouraging! Such a great reminder that even when we have nothing (or feel like we do), we always have hope.

A powerful story of how what seems like the end is always a new beginning!

Once we remember that we’re priceless, we will naturally walk away from that which tarnishes us and toward those who appreciate us. Stories such as Tina’s serve as a powerful reminder of what is possible when we respect ourselves.

Hi Deanna,
Anything is possible if you want it bad enought and Tina did…
Tina had the courage to move on…and as you said, many are not as lucky.
Thank you for your comment and for sharing your thoughts with us.

Hi Andrew,
It is a very inspiring story, and Tina definately didn’t get her success overnight.
She worked hard, but with dedication and motivation, she is who she is today. Like you said…”simply the best”.

Hi Mark,
You said it~
She probably wouldn’t be the person that she is today without having gone through what she did.

Hi Global Patriot,
Tina was a lucky woman to have gone through something so rough, and come out of it better off.
She probably never would have imagined getting as far as she has in life. She has a lot to be proud of.

Hi Gio .. I didn’t know some of the details of Tina’s story .. she certainly has found the strength to achieve so much .. but I guess during her upbringing she’d had to find that strength to continue through her youth. Everyone of your inspiring stories reminds us that nothing is impossible .. follow your dream - one imperfect step at a time.

Many thanks -
