Blessing in Cancer

Welcome back!

ryan_mcelveen_family

My friend Diana is married with 3 kids 12, 10, and 8 years old. She and her husband discovered that he has brain cancer eight years ago. During the time when their youngest was a new born and Diana was a happy stay at home mom. She was in the middle of shopping for a new home due to their expanding family. Her husband at time was working at a great job where he was high up in his company working 60 to 70 hours a week.

I can recall the day when I got the phone call about the news regarding his cancer. As a close friend to Diana my first thoughts were: What is going to happen to her? What is going to happen to the family? The kids and the new baby; how bad is the cancer? Can the dr. help him? What is going to happen financially? Endless questions racing through my mind.

The next 2 years was very significant. The doctors had opened up his heard in attempted to operate on the tumor, only to find that they can’t operate on this. He went through Kimo Therapy and all kinds of treatments. Diana went from being a stay at home mom to starting her own home base business in order to take care of her family and create income. Her husband went from being the bread winner to part time daddy day care.  It was a big adjustment for Diana and her family.

A year ago I was visit Diana at her home, and I asked her, “Do you ever wonder- if his cancer was a blessing in disguise?” What prompted my question was because as I look around in her home: I see a father who is very much involved with his kid’s daily lives. I see a husband who makes dinner for his family. I see a mother, a wife who is also a proud business owner. I see a family much closer connected to each to then ever before.

Diana said: “Oh yes! For the first 4 years of my oldest son’s life. My husband hardly gets to spend quality time with him. Since after the discovery of cancer, all three of my kids spend everyday of their lives with their father in it; I used to complain about how he has no idea what I do all day at home with the kids. Now we are a team at home together. My husband is in the best shape of his live, he takes excellent care of his body. I have my own business and it is doing well. I do feel that the cancer was a blessing in disguise!”

Yes, Diana never got the bigger house and they no longer buy new car in a regular basis. But the qualities of their lives have improved much more than any houses or cars can ever compare.

Blessing doesn’t always come in a pretty gift box; sometime it comes in a form that is unwanted. But if we flexible and willing to adjusted, sometime we can find blessing even in cancer.

Keep your eyes open for blessing, it is all around us.

Hello Giovanna, Thank you for sharing your loving tribute to your friend. Cancer is not easy. My sister lost her husband to cancer when her twin boys were just a year and one month old. They are now going to be 6. She worked from home after the twins were born. He died at home, with the loving care of his wife. She got married again less than a year ago. It was not easy for her, but she did a great job by herself, with the boys. It can be a blessing in many ways, like for your friend.

Hi Giovanna,

Such a wonderful story about your friend and her family. It reminds us so very much of our journey and Miracle Mia, our blessing in disguise. My preterm labor, her premature birth and it’s challenges, our “imperfect action” decision to become her full-time nurses, and as our incredible journey continues, it’s filled with many more blessings and opportunities to grow stronger as a family.

Thank you so much for sharing Diana’s story.

Many Blessings….

Hi Giovanna. This was an uplifting story. Life does have a way of dealing us surprises and redirecting our paths. Sometimes it is in our best interest to trust the process and see where we land.

Blessings often come in the disguise that we don’t expect.

Hi Giovanna,
What a wonderful story! And it just shows what really matters in life - it’s not the bigger house, or the nicer car, or more ‘toys’. It’s all about relationships, and really living life!

Wow Giovanna,

It’s nice of you to share your friend Diana’s story, and it’s big-hearted of her and her family to let you use their example. Sometimes we need to lose something, or come close, in order to cherish it. And time with his family is obviously something that he realised when the cancer came. The rest of us are so lucky - we can realise this without waiting for cancer, yet how many do? Thanks for sharing this!

Hi Gio .. I think that is great .. and I’m sure her husband feels more relaxed and that helps his situation. Everyone will remember those happy times, while the kids will see the benefits of looking at life differently, and Diana will have so much to offer the kids as they start to look at their adult life.

Wonderful - thanks for sharing Diana with us…

Hi Giovanna,

My mother passed away from cancer about four years ago. I left my job and my husband and I moved in with my parents so that I could take care of her. I took care of her for six months and we were with her when she passed away. It was one of the toughest experiences in my life but it made me a better person. My mother gave me many gifts in life but the greatest gift she gave me was the opportunity to take care of during those six months. Life is full of blessings which we take for granted. The fact that a person can walk and go to the bathroom on their own are HUGE blessings. Hope all is well! :)

Hi Nadia,
What a wonderful person you are! How proud your mother must be of you to stay be her side.
I am sure it meant more to her than words can describe.
Thanks for sharing Nadia, and have a great weekend!

It’s a perfect reminder that it’s not what happens in our life, but how we respond.

My favorite saying on this is, “it’s not what’s on your plate, but how you eat it.”

Giovanna Garcia says: 4 May 2009 - 3:36 pm

Hi J.D.

I agree totally, it has a lot to do with how we see things.
