Making It Count.

Welcome back!

Today’s blog post is a story came from a conversation I had with one of our reader Ms. Janice. The following is what Ms. Janice shared with me.

438026805qynjcq_fs

My favorite saying is “Making it count” and it came from my favorite movie Titanic. Do you remember the scene when Jack passed a note to Rose after dinner and in it he wrote: “Make it count” meet me at the clock.  That movie moment was very memorable to me, it is because of the meaning of what “making it count” meant to me. I live my life by that very same statement. I often questions myself What have I done to make it count? At the end of my life when I look back upon it, what will I see?

Throughout my life I had a lot of challenges that I had to overcome. I encounter obstacles that I never expected. As a young girl I have always got the feeling that I was  going to grow up and be SOMEONE, I wasn’t go to become a nobody, I knew I would amount to something great. I never really have any support from my parents, so from early on I knew that if I want to become someone great, is was going to be all up to me.

As a teenage girl, I got the biggest curveball throw at me. I became a single teenage mom. Everyone thought that I was inadequate to raise my daughter and I would never finish high school. I received constant harsh and negative comments from people who are most dear to me, family members including my parents and my closest friends. But I was determined to succeed in raising my daughter, graduate high school and get a college education.

Looking back today, I am grateful for all of the opportunities that I have to “making it count” and I have no regret toward any part of my past. My daughter and I have a great life together, she has grown to be a fine young lady. Watching her I know I did the right thing for the both of us. I did graduated from high school and I graduated from college before any of my siblings. My daughter did grow up watching me working full time while going to school. She learned the lesson of “making it count” from watching me.

Perhaps things could have been easier if I had the support from the people whom I was hoping to be supportive. But then again, maybe I wouldn’t have pushed as hard as I did and everything wouldn’t have as much meaning. And I might not have become the person that I am today.

My message for everyone is, my life might have seem imperfect from time to time. For example: when I felt I didn’t have the world best parents, when I became a teenage mom or when I have to make it all on my own with my daughter, while finishing school and working. But because I took on everyday with the believe of “making it count” and everything worked out for the best because I did my best.

Don’t worry so much about if things are perfect or not, just worry about making every day of your life count.

Thank you Ms. Janice for sharing your story with us. Do you have something you like to share? I am listening.

Hi Giovanna,

I agree that life is full of uncontrolables. I thought being older, I will gain more control. But, I feel life gets more unmanageable. Your post always give me power and courage to face to my life’s challenges. Thank you for your post. The clock picture reminded me the clock in Central Station, New York. FYI

Well done Janice! And thanks for sharing this story, Giovanna. Please tell Janice that I have had a ‘model’ life and am now 36 with no children. Sometimes I wish I had done it all differently and had children at 18, then they’d be almost adults now and I could still live my life. So both ways of living are equally good, and have their individual price.

What can we make with the hand that is given to us. I was not blessed with children at all. Not that I did not want them. Lost two, one at 3 month along, the other I was almost 5 months along. It is now to late in life to have them, even if I could. Thank you for the story. She has done well for herself and her child. Great job Janice!! Keep up the good work. Thank you Giovanna for the up lifting story.

Hi Gio .. It’s having faith in yourself and Janice has that in spades, she had the sense to realise early on that she couldn’t rely on anyone other than her own commonsense and hard work. Brilliant for her - she caught her curve ball and ran with it.

It’s fantastic that she’s got a lovely daughter - good for them both .. love conquers all .. one tick-tock at a time ..

Giovanna, this is just fantastic advice. Often times you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. You don’t know what small things you do that will turn out to have great impact later. Making every day count is a way to ensure that no matter what happens tomorrow, what you did today will matter.

I can relate, well put Ms. Janice! I am a single mom and it was not an easy path. I had lost what I call the 4 H’s years ago. My Husband (divorce), House (financially couldn’t afford as I was a SAHM at the time), Health(cancer scare) and some Hearing (overmedicated and chemo).
Now I am I am focussed on another H. Happiness!!!!! I am due to graduate from school and my health has stabilize. I now have a hearing aid and I am working on the career so that I can be a homeowner again..on my own terms!! Through it all, I made it a point to MAKE EACH DAY COUNT, actually each moment for time does fly..My kids are in their early teens now and it seems like just yesterday I was changing diapers!

Love you Gio.

I love that movie and missed that line. But I have it today. I’ll be thinking about that line in the morning and every encounter I have during the day.

I too really like the saying “make it count.”

My other favorite is, “make the most of what you’ve got.”
