Giovanna Garcia, Glenda Watson Hyatt at SOBCon

Last week I spend the weekend in Chicago at one of the best Bloggers Conference call SOBCon.  Given by my good friends Liz Strauss and Terry Starbucker, it was an amazing event. What I would like to share today is meeting one of the most inspiring people. A blogger that I have met online months ago “The left Thumb Blogger” Glenda Watson Hyatt and last weekend I finally got to meet her in person.

Glenda has Cerebral Palsy due to the complications at birth. The doctors advised her parents to institutionalize her; they told her parents that she wouldn’t amount to anything. However, through her determination, perseverance and her supportive family, Glenda proved the doctors wrong.

Glenda is able to use her left thumb to typing at the speed of 10 to 12 words per minute. She is a blogger and the Author of her own autobiography “I’ll Do It Myself”.  In her book she shares with everyone her lives story. An inspiration to all: how she integrated into a regular classroom, how she earn the Canada Cord, the highest award in Girl Guides, the outstanding Junior Student Award. And she even won a gold medal in horseback riding.

Glenda is also a speaker. That is right she is a speaker. At the SOBCon Glenda gave an excellent speech on Accessibility. Her wonderful presentation has great information, slide show and along with a lovely computer voice (I think Glenda call the voice Kate). That wonderful presentation is available for download as an E book at Glenda’s site: do it myself blog for anyone who wants to learn more about Accessibility. It is about a 30 minutes presentation and it tooks Glenda 3 months to create that.

What we can learn from Glenda is that circumstances in our lives are not always perfect, but we got to do the best with what we have. If it means only using one thumb to write a book that took 4 years in order to inspire the world. Then 4 years is just the right length of time.

If it means spending 3 months to prepare a 30 minutes speech and presentation, in order to teach everyone Accessibility. Then 3 months is how long it should take to do so.

The last sentence in Glenda’s book, she wrote: Soon, I’ll be ready for Oprah and Larry King! To be continued…

Whatever we wish to do we can do it, if we stop looking for perfection and just get started. Anything is possible. I hope to see Glenda on Oprah and Larry King one day, so can you! If that is what you wish for.

Such a great one. Things aren’t always perfect, but we can rise above any situation and succeed. Thanks for this!

Hi Positively Present,
Life isn’t always perfect, and we arn’t always perfect. As long as we try, that’s what counts. Imperfect Action is better than no action. We just need to try!

Beautiful story.

I really like the fact she plays to her strengths and has a channel for her voice.

Everybody has a story to tell.

Inspiring story! Yes, the only limits are the ones we create and if we create them we can remove them as has Glenda.

Hi Gio .. great to hear about Glenda .. the link isn’t quite right! .. can you change it to http://www.doitmyselfblog.com .. it’s myself and not yourself .. otherwise you’ll end up in Basingstoke with plumbers etc .. not quite Glenda’s scene I don’t think!

I just think it’s so wonderful what the new technology can do for us .. it just makes life interesting that we have these opportunities to connect with amazing people ..

Thanks for sharing ..
