The Cracked Pot

Welcome back!

The Cracked Pot

The Cracked Pot

A Water Bearer in China had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which he carried across his neck.

One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For two years, this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable, because it was unable to accomplish as much as the perfect pot.

After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, one day the cracked pot spoke to the water bearer by the stream. “I am ashamed of myself, because this crack on my side causes my water to leak out all the way back to your house.”

The bearer said to the pot, “Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side? That’s because I have always known about your crack, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water the flowers. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, we would not have such beauty.”

No two pots are the same. Each of us has our own unique cracks and flaws; these are our individual gifts.  That is what makes everyone so interesting and each of our lives so rewarding in its own way.

We have to look at ourselves with the acceptance of who we are, and we have to look for the good in each other.

Remember the path of the perfect pot is perfectly clean and clear, exactly the way one would have expected. But the path of the imperfect pot has the beautiful surprise gifts of flesh flowers.

What a great way to do two things at once. Water the plants as you bring the water from the river. What a nice story. Giovanna, thank you for sharing it. Have a good day.

Hi Giovanna,

Such a wonderful story to remind us once again that we are “perfectly imperfect” just as we are. There is good in everything and in everyone.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Many Blessings….

Hello Giovanna,

Excellent post. There are reasons for being the way it is for everything, even it looks like imperfection at a glance. If we change viewing angle, its meaning changes and value increase. Your post reminded me “Butterfly Dream”.

Thank you for your sharing.

Hi Giovanna. We all surely have a purpose. That is what this says to me. Thanks for sharing.

Hiya

Sometimes I only begin to fully appreciate a thing when I listen to another person’s view of it. Self criticisim can be incredibly distorting and as a previous commentator said ‘change viewing angle, its meaning changes and value increase.’

Thanks for this
Jens

Giovanna,

I believe that god made each and every one of us and he made us for a reason, flaws and all.

No matter what flaws we are burdened with, each of us has our own unique areas of talent where we can offer a great deal and make a meaningful contribution.

And with respect to our areas of weakness, there are no doubt others who have been gifted with amazing strengths in these areas and our weaknesses just may create room for others to exercise their wonderful strengths.

Wonderful story and I love how you’ve addressed the uniqueness of all of us. We are all different. We all have flaws. But that’s what makes us all wonderful and special.
