Santiago Gori the honest taxi driver

Santiago Gori the honest taxi driver

Argentina is in the southeast of South America, a culture that has been heavily depended on agricultural. In 2008 farmers protested increased export taxes on farm products by striking and blockading roads, leading food shortages in major cities at the time. Since then the economic situation in Argentina had be a roller coaster ride.

For the people in Argentina, whom are used to seeing corruption all around them. The following story is an extraordinary example that there is good in people no matter how tough the time is.

Santiago Gori, a taxi driver in the coastal city of La Plata, found a bag of money after driving an elderly couple to a short distance. Santiago dropped off the elderly couple and he found a bag with $32,500 (£21,600) that was left in the back of his taxi. A few days later Santiago managed to locate his passengers again and he returned the bag of money.

Two young advertising agency employees found out about Santiago and decided to set up a website http://devolvelelaguitaaltaxista.com/ in Santiago’s honor calling for gestures of gratitude for what is seen as an extraordinary act of honesty.

Now thousands of people have accessed the web site and have left hundreds of rewards: One visitor offered to produce in his studio a song chosen by Mr. Gori to kick-start a potential artistic career. Another offered a snow-boarding lesson in Argentina’s ski resort of Bariloche, while an Argentine abroad promised to bring back a second-hand GPS satellite receiver for Santiago’s taxi. Many donated money, so far the equivalent of $14,580 has been donated.

Hundreds of messages were left for Mr. Gori of “Thank you”. Amount all of the Thank you one of them said it best: “I wish more people were like you.”

Santiago seems very casual about the whole thing. He said he only did what had to be done - and that he does not quite know what to do with all the things he has been offered.

A honest man who shows the world that honesty live on even in the toughest time.

Hi Giovanna

Dishonesty and corruption are so saddening. We are exposed to it a great deal here in South Africa.
A couple of month’s back my boyfriend accidentally left a Birthday card on his car. When he realised and went back for it, someone had opened the envelope and taken the card (even though it was already written on!) Wow!

Great story! It’s so amazing what people will do, even under the most difficult of circumstances. This story should be an inspiration to all of us.

Hi Gio .. that’s a great story .. and so wonderful that everyone has responded so well to Mr Gori’s extremely caring action .. I wonder if the old couple know what’s happening .. I expect so.

By the sound of it .. he will make good use of the cash and spread the caring spirit around ..

Thank you so much

Hi Hilary,
Thanks for your comment.
I think the Mr. Gori deserves it. His unselfishness and care and concern for others has definatley not gone unnoticed.
He probably never would have imagined this much positive publicity.
He is an inspiration to us all.
