How did people become so cynical?
Welcome back!
2 days ago I posted “Kindness for your robber” a story about a man name Julio Diaz. In short it was a story about Julio got robbed at knife point and he ended up taken his robber to dinner. It is an inspiring story of a social worker’s kindness could have changed a trouble teen’s life.
There were a lot of great comments, wisdom and person thoughts shared. What I found troubling is the alarming number of comments advocating violent toward the teen robber and the amount of doubt regarding the legitimate to this story.

“Imma be honest, Once i got the kid’s trust in me, I would kick in him the nuts and beat the shit out of him.” By Mohammad Zaman
“I have to be honest, it sounds like an elaborate made up story. But, its a nice sentiment.” By JB
“What an arse, it’s made up by a saddo.” By Ruby
“This story is either omitting lots of important details, or it is a farce. I’m not buyin’ it.” By Jeff
“Let me guess, the little teenager grew up to be Obama? Self aggrandizing American baloney.” By Steve
“Photoshopped.” By Pillohyte
“You should have stabbed the kid in the eye while he was off-guard.” By Anon
“If there were more people like Julio, there’d probably very quickly be less people like Julio, if you catch my drift.” By Prodnose
“I have a concealed carry pemit, The kid would have had a sad face for bringing a knife to a gunfight.” By L. Wayne
“This was a great story, but not typical. Most people robbed at knife point who offer more, usually get rewarded with the business end of a shiv. Idealism is great late at night when you’re truly alone, but if this were a true story, our fine author wouldn’t be alive to write about it. Not many convicts can be “saved” by being nice. No matter how nice you are to a lion, eventually he will eat you because it is in his nature.” By Realist
“I liked this parable, but there’s no way this is a true story. It’s a liberal’s yarn about how things should be. The unfortunate reality is that most criminals have had it so bad for so long that kindness is not only seen as a weakness, but even as condescending. Our here would’ve been rewarded with a trip to the emergency room if he were lucky. The only thing that would’ve saved him would be the 2nd amendment (for now).” By Doubting Thomas
“Julio then proceeded to beat the unholy shit out of the teen when he dropped his guard” By Carter
“He must have money falling out of his arse. Most people I know need every penny that they have. Yes it was a decent thing to do, but he was only able to do it because he had money to spare.
How would this story have turned out if he had needed all the money in his wallet to feed his family? Might he have resisted and gotten himself stabbed and killed? Would we feel all warm and fuzzy over that story?
He should have chased the thief down and broken his arms. What right has anyone to take property belonging to someone else? You want something? Earn money and buy it.” By Gabe
“Should have stabbed the kid in the belly when he gave you the knife-made his free dinner spill out everywhere.” By Thooky
“I would of let him treat me to dinner then stabbed him and taken the rest of the money and the coat.” By Matt Soerrens
“I would of stab him in the thigh after dinner.”
When I posted the story, I saw it as a very inspiring example of how ones reaction to a trouble teen could made a changed on his life. I am not saying we should all try to do what Julio did, after all Julio is a trained social worker. So Julio may have seen something in the teen that leaded him to do what he did. My hope is that we can receive the message of peace in action from Julio’s story. For those who think Julio Diaz is too good to be true, the story came form Story Corps and you can listen to this story being told by him in an audio.
How did some people become so cynical and hateful? Why is it so hard for them to believe in the good in people.

there is a spectrum of belief in stories that are so extraordinary like the one about julio’s robbery.
couple things come to mind…
1) we humans are rarely that giving, brave, & fearless.
2) it is hard for some to value that kind of honorable behavior when our culture & perhaps human nature in general perpetuates all of the opposite characteristics in the stories we are told on a daily basis.
i just want you to be encouraged by the positive feedback, giovanna. it is true that there are haters & cynics. it is true that there are people who are apathetic at best. but wonderfully, there are people who find stories like the one you shared to be life lessons on ways to make this world a better place.
keep on keeping on believing in the good in people.
what you are doing is to be treasured in my book.
Giovanna, I can’t answer your question. I’m not sure you’ll find an answer to that one. Keep up the good work.
Wow, I didn’t realise the reactions were so hostile. I guess the reason you posted the story in the first place, Giovanna, is because you realised this was the exception and not the rule? Given this, I suppose it’s natural that many people don’t buy it.
I don’t know whey people are cynical - hurt by reality too many times? Fear of being hurt even if we’ve not been personally hurt ourselves? Just hearing too many negative stories?
Maybe we need more blogs like yours to counter the cynicism everywhere.
Wow, that’s crazy. People are so hostile!! I used to be very cynical myself and I think it’s the easy path to take. When you look around at the world, it’s easy for most people to see the bad and to become hateful because of it. You have to choose to see the good, to look for happiness, and a lot of people don’t want to do this. I’m always inspired by your posts and think they are wonderfully uplifting. Keep up the good work and don’t let the haters discourage you!
to find the gems of inspiration & goodness, i dig through the mire. there is an overwhelming tone of said negativity. that’s what makes the positivity so much sweeter.
Hi, courteous posts there
hold responsible’s exchange for the compelling dirt
Hi Gio ..thanks for posting this .. I too was shocked at people’s reactions to the story ..
People are so defensive .. or negative .. and they seem to react without thinking things through - especially when there’s time to react such as writing a comment ..
I hope it’s a wake up call for some - thanks for sharing

Hiya Giovanna
You’re question is not easy to answer. Reading history books (if they are accurate in any way) tell us there have always been violent people alongside the more peacable (but not passive). It’s unfortuntate that some people makes claims of a violence.
Although I’m not surprised by this reaction, because it gives an accurate reflection of the attitudes in society. It’s a good reminder of how unnecessary violence can be and how much healthier and practical a peacable solution is.
Thanks for a provoking post
Jens
I’m a fan of reading the situation and knowing the context.

Hi Positively Present
People can be hostile and very cynical….and it is not an eary path to take. It’s so much easier to see the negative in people than the positive, but it will ware you down. We all need to try to see the good in people.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Have a beautfiul day.

Hi Hilary
I think this shows us that people who are working for the positive messages like you and I are needed in the world. Hopefully one day we can reach some of the cynics.

Hi Jens
You are right about the History Books. I couldn’t agree with you more on that. I guess all we can do is keep spreading the positive message and see who it is out there that have their heart open to the message of goodness.
Thank You for your comment and sharing your thoughts.
