Celebrate Memorial Day with Tiger Woods.

Welcome back!

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.

At the U.S. Memorial Day website there is a lot of information about this special day, including how to observe Memorial Day.

  • By visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.
  • By visiting memorials.
  • By flying the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon.
  • By flying the ‘POW/MIA Flag’ as well (Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act).
  • By participating in a “National Moment of Remembrance“: at 3 p.m. to pause and think upon the true meaning of the day, and for Taps to be played.
  • By renewing a pledge to aid the widows, widowers, and orphans of our falled dead, and to aid the disabled veterans.

Furthermore, the site teaches us the spirit of Memorial Day, which is so much more than just one day. Too many of us who are beneficiaries of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, we often do not thinking about those who served our country in a day to day basis. Not only we should take Memorial Day to properly “Memorial” and actively thanks our National Heroes. We should also remember them every day and show them our appreciation whenever possible.

In January 2009 Tiger Woods was invited to speak at President Obama’s Inauguration. Tiger Woods’s speech shows us that, he remember those who served. Even at the day of Inauguration Celebration, Tiger still remember of our National Heroes. He demonstrated to us that every day is a day to remember and honored those who served our country.

Below is the text of his speech, entitled:

“You’ll Never Walk Alone,” as posted on Tiger Woods’s Web site.

“I grew up in a military family - and my role models in life were my Mom and Dad, Lt. Colonel Earl Woods.  My dad was a Special Forces operator and many nights friends would visit our home. They represented every branch of the service, and every rank.
“In my Dad, and in those guests, I saw first hand the dedication and commitment of those who serve. They come from every walk of life. From every part of our country. Time and again, across generations, they have defended our safety in the dark of night and far from home.

“Each day — and particularly on this historic day — we honor the men and women in uniform who serve our country and protect our freedom. They travel to the dangerous corners of the world, and we must remember that for every person who is in uniform, there are families who wait for them to come home safely.

“I am honored that the military is such an important part, not just of my personal life, but of my professional one as well. The golf tournament we do each year here in Washington is a testament to those unsung heroes.
“I am the son of a man who dedicated his life to his country, family and the military, and I am a better person for it.

“In the summer of 1864, Abraham Lincoln, the man at whose memorial we stand, spoke to the 164th Ohio Regiment and said: ‘I am greatly obliged to you, and to all who have come forward at the call of their country.’

“Just as they have stood tall for our country - we must always stand by and support the men and women in uniform and their families.
“Thank you, and it is now my pleasure to introduce the US Naval Glee Club.”

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Take an act of remembrance for those who have served our national. Share with me about your thoughts on this very special day.

Hi Gio .. thank you for the post on your Memorial Day .. I love Tiger Wood’s words about his parents .. “they dedicated their lives to their country, their family and their community” and today we could and should add ‘world’ ..

Our Remembrance Day is in November and it always seems so appropriate as it is always cold, damp and gloomy .. that we should really appreciate our forebears who’ve led us to this point in our lives - that we have freedom, we can help ourselves and we have a future of our own .. and we should be very grateful and appreciative.

Thank you for sharing ..

Growing up I remember a lot of family and friends in the Memorial Day parades. You could always see the memories and emotion on their faces. I’ll summarize it as proud, solemn, and powerful.

I am a Reagan era bloomer and was fortunate not to go to war. I did serve in the Armed Forces and am alway in awe of those who sacrificed so much to protect my freedoms.

To the loved ones left behind, my heart cries. You are left with the memories and we are left with steadfast liberties and freedoms. We salute your sons and daughter who gave the ultimate price for a better life of someone they may have never known and you remember every day those sacrifices that sting.

Our hat are off to all veterans and families today and everyday. Thank you.

Giovanna, thank you for such a nice post on Memorial Day. We have so much to be thankful for with the freedoms that we have and the great people that help to keep it that way. We do give thanks for all that they do and have done. Wonderful job on this.
