What can you learn from the Peanut Man?
Welcome back!
If you love what you do and every day you do it the best you can. Than it doesn’t matter what it is. You can be very successful at that, even if it is selling bags of peanuts.
Roger Owens is the internationally-famous peanut guy at the Dodger Stadium. A vendor who can pitch a bag of nuts under his leg and into your seat from 40 rows away. Roger has been a peanut vendor at the Stadium since 1962. His consistent hard work and showmanship throughout the years not only helped increase his growing fan base who was thrilled with his amazing tosses. It has also made Roger Owens an icon of Dodger Stadium.
Roger have a lot of loyal fans, he lovingly call some of them season peanut holders. These are business men who have season tickets that would send Roger checks before the season to ensure Roger will toss free peanuts to their guests who attends to the game. Many others are fans of this peanut man since they were kids, and who now bring their own children to games.
Fame has offered Roger countless experiences throughout the years, including guest spots on ”The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno, a role in the movie ”Robin Hood: Men in Tights,” he has throw out the first pitch at games. Roger even got his picture in the Hall of Fame.
Looking at this legendary peanut vendor it is hard to image what tough life Roger came from.
The Owens family when through some hard times, Roger and his eight siblings had to be broken up and sent to foster homes in the early 1950s, after his mother, Mary, suffered a mental breakdown and was admitted to a hospital. The family was too poor to survive without her. After several years, when Roger turned 15 he convinced his father, Ross, to pull the family back together, promising to find work to support the family staying together.
Roger began working as a stock boy at a drug store, and slowly advanced his way into the Dodger organization as a crowd vendor, selling soda, then ice cream and finally selling peanuts.
You can learn more about Roger Owens at his website Roger Owens Peanut Man and also pick up a copy of the book “The Perfect Pitch” to read about his wonderful life story.
Roger sees his job as more than selling peanuts, but also setting a good example.
“There are just certain things that apply in being successful and those are: Sincerity, honesty, good communication and extra effort!” By Roger Owens
No matter what you do, give it your best. It does matter! That is what I got from the Peanut Man.

Hiya
I like the simple advice: love what you do and Roger’s applying of certain successful things. He’s quite a star and for me this is highlighted by his desire to keep his boyhood family together. I admire his longevity in one workplace too.
Thanks
Jens
I love this story. With so many unemployed today it not only gives hope it rustles ones imagination. We will create new ways to be in our world because the old ways don’t work anymore. Roger’s story is a blessing to those who are in that stadium. It makes me want to go to the game to see him!
Great story! I’d never heard it before and it was really inspiring. I love all of the stories you post on your site. They are always so uplifting!
This story brought back day gone by. I remember the peanut man tossing me a bag of peanuts at a Dodger game. I must have only been in first or second grade. My dad would rave about his accuracy and showmanship.
Long live Roger Owens and his legend at Dodger stadium.

What an intriguing title! Great post as usual.
Give it your best. indeed.
Giovanna, thank you for letting us know more about this great man. He has a very humble job, but he is a giant among men. What a good example he is to others. Better than the players of the sport games that he is in the stands for. Look at how lucky he is, He gets to see all the games that are at the ball field. For some that would be the best of all things in life to be at the ball field every game.

Hi Jens
I agree with you in today’s world longevity is hard to come by. And a 15 yr old working to keep his family together just spoke right to my heart.

Hi Tess
Roger’s story gives everyone hope and it shows that if we are willing, we can make something out of ourselves. It doesn’t matter what it is that we do, if we just do it well. We can all be somebody!

Hi Deanna
And you are right I know some people who would give anything to see all the games in the ball park. Roger Owens is a lucky man!
I love the way you commented on this. “He has a very humble job, but he is a giant among men.” Well said.

Hi Gio .. what a wonderful story .. and he kept going .. he obviously loved the interaction with the audience and developed that relationship that we all talk about .. so each year he had a loyal following. Some people hold families together .. he must be inspirational to his brothers and sisters, and to his own kids and nephews & nieces, let alone setting standards for the the crowd .. year on year being the same ..
Lovely - peanuts all round ..
