Do you feel like you have been hit by a Tornado?

Welcome back!

You and the Tornado

You and the Tornado

Right now many people are going through changes. Some people are in the middle of looking for new job. Some people are in the middle of changing career. Others are relocating their residences, new school for their kids etc.. It is understandable that all of these can give the feeling of uneasiness.

I like to take a moment to remind every one that: Changes create the rhythm of our life. Without changes our lives would be very flat and uneventful. Yes, sometimes change can be stressful, and our initial reaction might be, “Changes are bad!” But if you look closely, changes are opportunities under cover.

I have told the following story before; however, a great story should be told many times over. So, here it goes again.

Let me tell you a story about a man name Richard. Richard worked for a family business. One day Richard decided to leave the family business and go out on his own to start a high-end electronics store. Richard was doing great on his own. By the ended of his first year in business he had opened 3 stores. By the third year he had a total of 6 stores. 15 years went by and Richard was doing fantastic. He had 9 stores and everything was going his way. Then one day a tornado hit the Midwest. It nearly wiped out one of his most profitable stores. This was his money machine.

Everyone in town was frantic about their own losses and everywhere you looked was chaos. Richard on the other hand, saw something different. He saw an opportunity to have a Tornado Sale. The day of the Tornado Sale Richard realized there were more cars than he had ever seen and the line of customers was so long that it wrapped around the parking lot. In his 15 years of business there had never been a sale that was this successful.

Why? What was the difference? The theme to this Sale was “Good brand name electronics at a discounted price.” So Richard changed his entire company model. He changed High End Electronics to Good brand name electronics at a Discounted Price! As a result, Richard became the electronics retail Giant, the nation’s biggest consumer electronics chain with over 500 stores in the US. Richard is Best Buy! Best Buy was born out of a disaster.

Richard was on the verge of losing everything. His Best Store was destroyed! When all of his fellow shop owners were saying what bad luck they had and were asking why this happened to them, Richard saw an Opportunity to do something new. He never had a Tornado Sale before! Sure, he had done all kinds of sales, but not a Tornado Sale!

Thanks to his ability to deal with changes, a tornado became his best friend. Richard Schulze is estimated at 3.4 billion dollars Net worth. Not bad for someone with just a High School Diploma.

Many of us may feel like we are in a Tornado right now. However, if you look closely you might see your opportunity to do something new. Don’t fight the Tornado; just make the best of it.

Hello, Giovanna, it is all in our attitude as to how we look at things. Are we looking for the best things, the good things, things that are different from others that we might already know. It does all come to change-are you making the changes or is someone else making them for you. It is best if we are the ones making the changes, not leaving it up to someone else.

Good story - I hadn’t heard it before.

It’s kind of like ‘go with the flow’…everything tends to work out better that way.

Hi Giovanna,

Great story! Life and circumstances are really about our own perspective on the situations at hand. And changes are also a huge part of our individual growing process. It’s one of life’s essentials.

Thanks for always sharing inspiring moments.

Hi Gio .. I’ve been feeling like that for a couple of years while my mother has been so ill .. but my future has come out of it, which has surprised me in so many ways - opening up new horizons .. and allowing me to develop a latent ‘talent’ ..

change is good .. it gives a chance to re-look and see things in a new light ..

Thanks for reminding us ..
