You are in the right place at the right time.
Welcome back!

In the right place at the right time.
Have you heard of the saying , “In the right place at the right time.” That statement normally are in sentences like: “So and so got their big break because they were in the right place at the right time.” Or “I got lucky I was in the right place at the right time.”
My question is, ‘How would these people know, when he or she is in the right place at the right time?” When that right place…right time thing happen. Did a big ‘YES!’ neon sign light up? The answer to the question is most likely “NO!”
So if there are no sign…how does this good things happen to these people? Is it just pure luck? Or is it something else… Are these good fortune people different from others. Could it be that they more open and available for the good opportunities to happen to them?
Back in 90s in my early days of owning my computer company. One day a bid request from our city comes through the fax machine. It said that they are considering new computers for a few departments. It didn’t have too much details: Are they buying or just budgeting? How many systems they look for? All it said was - they are considering.
The bid had very specific requirements on these computers and the proposal has to be done in a specific format which included a lot of details information. To do this bid it will require quite a bit effort in research and documentation, not to mention this bid close in 3 days and the city need this hand deliver to city hall between 9 to 10AM on the 3rd day.
The same bid request went out to over 30 other computer companies in the area. A few of them are friends of mine, so I spoke with them about the city’s bid. My friends shared with me about what they have heard, about bidding for city’s contract: The city request bids often for budgeting purposes; the city mostly only buy from their preferred vendors; the city pay their bills in 90 days or more and that is very difficult for small company like us to accommodate.
I thought about it and I decided, ‘Why not do the bid! We never done any kind of bid like this before. Even if we don’t get it, we would have learned how to do business with the city.’
We delivered the bid on time and we were the 2nd company who got the bid in. When the bid closed there were only 3 bidders. One week later, I was informed that my company was not the lowest bidder. However, we got the contract for over a hundred systems. Plus we got the contract to the installation for all of systems at 9 locations within the city.
As a result my company got on the city’s preferred vendors list, and a wonderful working relationship with the city for a long time.
Years later someone asked me, “How did your company got on the city’s prefer vendors list? How did you get so lucky? Were you in the right place at the right time…?” I think you know my answer!?
Has there been time, that you wonder if you unknowingly turned away good opportunity?
Be open and available for the good opportunities to happen to you. Don’t be so quick in coming up with the answers to saying ‘NO’ the opportunity. You might just be stand in the right place at the right time at this very moment.

Hi Gio .. well done - took the opportunity as a learning curve and gave it a shot. If you don’t try - you don’t get. The other thing - we never know when opportunities are going to arrive - it’s just our continual imperfect actions, so that we’re always in the mix and ideas, thoughts and opportunities will present themselves as we ‘travel’ the journey.

Hi, found you through Davina.
I agree completely with you, sometimes you just have to take the plunge. What have you got to lose? And sometimes the rewards are great, just because you took the chance.
What a great example of creating an opportunity for yourself and forging ahead despite self-doubt.
Hi Giovanna,
People put themselves in the “right place at the right time,” just like you did. If we’re always thinking that, and taking the imperfect actions to put us there, the opportunities are limitless!
Thank you for sharing another one of your great imperfect action experiences!
Many Blessings….

Funny, this one reminded me latest Jim Carry’s film - yesman. Have you seen it? It is lightweight one - suits Carry
- but with very deep meaning under the hood. I liked it a lot. And the post too
Beautiful write up.
My favorite definition is “luck is when skill and opportunity come together.” I’ve found time and again that you can’t predict success. Instead, you increase your odds by getting up to bat more often.
Giovanna,
I don’t think it is luck. You make your own luck.
Giovanna,
You are such an inspiration to other to just give it a go. You never know until you try. Thanks for sharing this personal example.
Wow - good for you for going for it! I’ll remember your example when an opportunity comes my way and I’m leaning towards ‘no’ -this inspires me to take a leap and say ‘yes!’ Thanks for the post.
This is a great story! Being lucky is hard work!
Hi Giovanna,
I love the message of this article. I am not a believer that luck is some random thing. It is a state of being open to whatever life may bring you and giving it a chance. Have you seen the movie “Yes Man”? It is a funny movie with Jim Carrey that is about this very point of being open to whatever may come across your path.
Good advice! Thanks.

Hi Giovanna,
There is so much wisdom in this story. Looking back, it has usually turned out that what looked like the smallest, most insignificant decisions ultimately had the largest impact. That impact works both ways, so we are reminded not to neglect the taking care of the small things.
