The ripple effect

Welcome back!

Drop a pebble in the water

Drop a pebble in the water

Drop a pebble in the water:
Just a splash, and it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples circling on
and on and on,
Spreading, spreading from the center,
flowing on out to the sea.
And there is no way of telling where the end is going to be.

Drop a pebble in the water:
In a minute you forget,
But there’s little waves a-flowing,
and there’s ripples circling yet,
And those little waves a-flowing to a great big wave
have grown;
You’ve disturbed a mighty river just by dropping in a stone.

Drop an unkind word, or careless:
In a minute it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples circling on
and on and on.
They keep spreading, spreading,
spreading from the center as they go,
And there is no way to stop them,
once you’ve started them to flow.

Drop an unkind word, or careless:
In a minute you forget;
But there’s little waves a-flowing,
and there’s ripples circling yet,
And perhaps in some sad heart a mighty wave of tears you’ve stirred,
And disturbed a life was happy ere you dropped that unkind word.

Drop a word of cheer and kindness:
Just a flash and it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples circling on
and on and on,
Bearing hope and joy and comfort on each splashing, dashing wave
Till you wouldn’t believe the volume of the one kind word you gave.

Drop a word of cheer and kindness:
In a minute you forget;
But there’s gladness still a-swelling,
and there’s joy circling yet,
And you’ve rolled a wave of comfort whose sweet music can be heard
Over miles and miles of water just by dropping one kind word.

I often notice the effect of my words on myself and others. I just as often forget or become mindless of them too. So this poem is a pleasant reminder for me.
I love this tip: ‘Choose wisely and be accountable!’

Thanks
Jens

Love this. I really think the ripple effect works for happiness. Recent studies have shown that if you’re happy, the people around you are going to be happier and the people around them are going to be happier. It’s amazing what your attitude can do for the world!

I remember when I first realized how true this is — what an eye-opener! I’ve been much more judicious about my words and actions ever since.

What a fabulous picture!

Hi Giovanna,

So many thoughts. First of all, I just love the picture that you used. Absolutely beautiful.

This whole post was a great example of the power of cause and effect. Words are so powerful. Sometimes people say things without thinking and can cause so much pain to another person. However, words that are chosen wisely can do wonders.

You always have such wonderful inspiration posts. I really appreciate the work that you are doing. :)

Hi Positively Present

I read that too. If we each acted out what we wish the world to be, the world around us will be just like what we wish for.

Hi Carla

If we can be more aware of our words and actions. We will change our world we are in.

Hi Deanna

When we speak we are responsible for our words. So we have to keep that in mind.

We often lose sight of how far ranging our thoughts and actions are. To realize that what we do affects the entire planet, gives us pause and allows us to make wiser choices.
