Yesterday, I was sitting in the waiting room at my doctor’s office. I picked up a People Magazine that was laying around on their coffee table, inside was a story: Feeding Moses. It was a story about a
community’s effort in feeding one baby for one widower father. Just when I started to get into this story, I got called in the office.
After leaving the doctor’s office, I went straight to the newsstand to buy my own copy of the Magazine. Only to learn that it was a past issues. I came home searching on the internet and I was able to find the following information about the story. This is not from People Magazine, but the meaning of this story is a must read.
Robbie Goodrich a history professor became a widower back in January when his son Charles Moses Martin Goodrich was born. His wife Susan was 46 yrs old and she die from a rare obstetric emergency at the Marquette General Hospital.
While Robbie was still in shock over his wife’s sudden death, Robbie quickly realized he had to find a way to feed his newborn son.
The hospital didn’t carry any breast milk, so a nurse helped Robbie looked into getting breast milk for baby Moses. They found that, the soonest they can have breast milk deliver to Marquette would take several days.
In the meantime, Robbie received a phone call from family friend who was still nursing her fourth child, 1-year-old Emily. In her message, she offered Robbie to nurse Moses.
That’s when the new dad realized he wanted baby Moses to be nursed. It’s something that his wife would have wanted.
With the help of a family friend, Nicoletta Fraire, Robbie made contact with Sally Keskey, founder of the Yooper Nursers - a local breast feeding support group. Within a brief time, nearly 20 women were found who offered to breast-feed Moses.
A schedule was put together with feeding times at 9 a.m., noon, 1:30 , 4 , 6:30 and 8 p.m. Six times a day a different mother has been feeding Moses. During the night, Robbie bottle-feeds his son breast milk that was pumped by the women.

Robbie Goodrich and Baby Moses
The busy dad says that having the women come to his house to nurse Moses and often bringing their own children, has been good for him. Robbie said,
“These are deeply caring individuals who spend time and work with me,” he said. “They’ve all treated me with the utmost graciousness and empathy.”
Robbie hope to find enough mothers willing to provide breast milk, to continue nursing Moses until he is a year old.
The dedication of the donation moms is something that is not often found especially when all of these women probably have babies under two. Robbie added: “It’s commitment, passion - it’s love. It’s an act of love.”
This story reminded me of the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” May be, it takes a village to feed Moses… A village of women who care and have so much love in their hearts to give little Moses.

I like the village metaphor and I always enjoy your stories. They’re inspiring.
Wow Gio,
What a heart warming story. For every act of selfishness in this world there are a thousand acts of kindness and we need to focus just on them. Thanks for posting it.

Wow, what women. It may not take a village but it’s certainly nice when the village is there! Great story, Gio.
Hi Daphne
I agree, those ladies are amazing they have such big hearts. Being that they are all mothers, they must all be very busy…yet they all took the time to give love to someone else.

I recently saw No Woman, No Cry by Christy Turlington Burns, where Robbie’s story was featured. I knew I just had to look up this remarkable man, and was relieved to know women stepped in to give his son the one thing he could not. Baby Moses is loved!
