Welcome back!

The Chronic "Yes, but" Syndrome

The Chronic "Yes, but" Syndrome

What is the Chronic “Yes, but” Syndrome?
It is a syndrome the cause a person to have the uncontrollable feeling of excitement and responding in a quick “YES”, then immediately following by the over whelming fear of risk, there by his or her reflexology of saying the word “BUT”. As a result, the person never takes any action.

Who can be affected by this syndrome?
Everyone can be a victim of the Chronic “Yes, but” Syndrome.

What is the risk of Chronic “Yes, but” Syndrome?
Self-defeating behavior: Normally in the form of rationalizing their current circumstance. Often time patients say thing like, “Yes, I could do…but…”They do nothing and their lives never improve.
Unhappiness: Patients felt unresolved and burnout about their problems.
Depression: Life becomes stagnant, maintaining status quo and settling for less than you deserve.
Isolation: You wallow in self-pity and others are turned off by your complaint. Nobody wants to help you and you felt ignored.

Common costs of the Chronic “Yes, but” Syndrome?
The older a person gets the more likely they feel the need of security and comfort. This usually is due to the memories of past history of the person’s experience. A person’s risk tolerance decrease and there need of safety increase. The obsession of the needs of knowing all the “in’s and out’s” of any situation become so powerful that the patient can’t start on anything new or do anything different without a high leave of certainty like a “Guarantee”.  While the person are busy waiting for the Guarantee the Chronic “Yes, but” Syndrome sets in and it can be permanent.

Prevention and cure to the Chronic “Yes, but” Syndrome.
1. Stop saying the word “BUT”.
2. Ask yourself “What if I take action, what good things could possibly happen?”
3. Ask yourself “What if I take action, what is the worst possible thing that can happen?”  Can you live with that?
4. Decide to pursue a better live for yourself and choose to take action.
5. Adopt the philosophy that Imperfect Action is better than No action and live by that every day.

Great post! I definitely suffer from “yes, but” syndrome from time to time. This happens when I’m trying to rationalize something when I know for a fact that it’s wrong. Knowing the problem is half the battle and I’m working on it every day!

Buts really can get in the way. One of my favorite techniques is the butt-rebuttal technique from the book Feeling Good.

Hi Gio .. thanks for your ‘yes buts’ .. they are horrible things and I hate them .. sometimes one is just overwhelmed with life - so yes buts come in .. time will eliminate those and then the yes buts can become yes done. I know I can’t do it all now - so I take on board what I need to do .. and work forward.

Things have just taken a sea change here .. thank goodness - so a lot of the yes buts look to be kicked into touch and I can get on ..

Thanks for reminding - as Hugo and Roxanne say .. lots of imperfect actions and move forward all the time

If it has to be done, it is up to you. So true, the only person you can count on is yourself. Cheers to imperfect action.

Hi Giovanna,

I laughed when I saw the picture because it goes so well witht the picture. I am often amazed at how so many people want to remain stuck in their misery. I think why so many people say “yes but” is because they do not want to do the work necessary to get out of their misery. People want everything without doing anything. It just does not work that way. Oh well. :)

Hello Giovanna,
It is good to get out of the “yes, but”. You do that by taking action every day. A little step here, a move there and soon you find yourself where you want to be. It all comes down to what you do and how you do it.
