Are we Superficial?
Welcome back!

America worships celebrities: actors, musicians, and even people who are famous for being famous! We see them on television, in movies, in magazines. We know how much money they make for staring in films. I like good movies and good music and good entertainment as much anyone, but are these celebrities really worthy of the millions of dollars they make? What about intellectuals and Nobel Prize winning humanitarians? How come those people aren’t making millions of dollars? They are people of substance, and yet we as an American society value what we see on the outside more than the substance that is inside people.
In America’s eyes, being pretty is more important than anything else. If you look like a star, then you’re a star. It’s the celebrities on magazine covers, not the Nobel Prize winners. It’s celebrities we look to for what’s hot. We look to see what they’re wearing, how much they spent on their weddings, what cars they drive, what type of haircuts they have. We fixate on what’s on the outside and by doing so have trained ourselves to look at the external part of a person instead of the internal.
The true happiness of success comes from the internal part of a person, and if we’re not successful on the inside, no amount of material goods or money or good looks is going to make up for what we lack on the inside. We must have substance. At the end of our lives the only things that matter are the relationships we’ve built, the contributions we’ve made to the world, and the lives we’ve affected. If you measure your success by the fame or the fancy things you have, then you’re doing it for the wrong reasons and you’re undermining your own success. Stay focused on the things that are important in your life and you’ll naturally move towards them and achieve success.
We can’t control what the society valued, but we can be responsible for our own value compass. Don’t get caught up with the Superficial…remember the real values in you.

Giovanna,
Thank you for the reminder of the things that are important in life. What is inside of each of us and how we treat others and if we live good lives. It is not all the glits and glitter that we see to much of. What are our values and what do we hold dear to us. To many are getting thinking that is what is important and it is not and they loose the way to what is important.
Dan and Deanna “Marketing Unscrambled”
Hi Giovanna. Some people choose not to “see” the real Self. Instead they distract themselves with pretty things and attempt to hide their flaws. Trouble is, our flaws are where a lot of our strengths come from. Many people have become lazy and don’t look past what is seen on the outside.
Beauty and value are always in the eye of the beholder.
That said, it’s a good reminder to see how our intrinsic value can be offset by market value. Society, culture and groups can really influence the way we look at things.
Great post! I definitely think my society is pretty superficial and, in turn, I can be really superficial at times, which makes me sad. I try not to focus on appearances but it’s definitely hard when so much of society encourages us to do so. This is a great post and has really brought to my attention the concept of superficiality. Great picture to go with it, by the way.
So fitting!
Hi Gio,
You’ve discussed a great point here.Actually most of us admire the external things because they are easily speak with feelings. That’s what all the marketing campaigns are also after.Being superficial is lot more easier than being the guy who thinks deeply. But when you go for the core values of something or someone it always worth your effort
Totally a great post !
Hi Gio,
You’ve discussed a great point here. Actually those external things connect directly with the feelings. So all the marketing campaigns also focus on this. But if you are going after core values of someone or something you’ll never regret.
An awesome post !
“are these celebrities really worthy of the millions of dollars they make? What about intellectuals and Nobel Prize winning humanitarians? How come those people aren’t making millions of dollars?” — wel, I think that ones wants money and the others don’t.
I don’t think that a Nobel Prize winner is focused on money.. a star, YES! (it is a matter of acting having a high target in life).
you, as an amerian society, value what’s in the outside like every other society in this up-side-down world.. actualy, it doesn’t even matter what the society thinks about me as an individual; i know i want money and i will have them one way or another. the same with the Nobel Prize winner: it doesn’t matter if society thinks I’m a crazy mathematician, .., I know I will find a revolutionary solution for certain paradox in the universe and I am sure I will find it.
Take Michael Jackson as an example: Do you think that all news/press corporations are thinking about who Michael was as a human being? nope, .., they found an opportunity in he’s death and they are exploiting it. they want money, and they make money because they simply want this without thinking about the people died because of Michael’s death and the milions life he-s music changed..
too much about Michael Jackson… i think..
by the way, .., superficiality can encourage us to a imperfect action somehow..
I like this blog…

Hi Davina
I agree with you my freind. There are two side to superficial, the one that hide behind the superficial and the one who are too quick to judge.

Hi J.D.
The market value does influence us, however, we can’t let the marketing machine take over our thoughts.

Hi Positively Present
I am glad you like the picture. What you are saying happen to all of us at time. We are influence by the society in our way of thinking, the key point is we remember what our core values and take notice when we are being influenced.

Hi Gio .. it is so important not to value all the hype and media attention, or believe everything that’s written under that subject - but to realise that our true values are at home, in ourselves, in the respect and love we give others ..
Thanks Gio -

What are you guys talking about? Without things being superficial, nothing would be interesting! There would be no art, no creativity, no imagination! Yes, I agree that completely engulfing yourself in the superficial world is not a good thing at all, but you can’t expect people to just burn all their nice clothing and throw away their makeup! Take this website for example. It is nicely decorated, but no one gives any thought to who created it, what they are like, what they feel. All they do is say “Nice web page, let’s go read some blogs.” If the webpage weren’t visually appealing, you wouldn’t get as many people to this site. Same goes with people. If someone isn’t visually appealing at all, they tend to be outcasts. And what is it with “Imperfect Action is better than No Action”? That is so not true! Sometimes it IS better to just sit back and let things take their own course.
Hi Charlotte,
I agree that the world needs art, creativity and imagination. That is what make us human.
Thanks for your comment.
