Children are our Future

Children are our Future

The Positive and The Negative

“I got two A’s,” said the little boy,
His voice was filled with glee.
His father said, “If you studied more,”
“You might have gotten three.”

“Mom, I’ve got the dishes done,”
The girl called from the door.
Her mother answered sharply,
“Well I hope you swept the floor!”

“I mowed the grass,” the tall boy said,
“And edged the sidewalks too.”
“I hope you improved,” his father said,
“On the job you usually do.”

The children in the house next door,
Seemed happy and content.
The same thing happened over there,
But this is how that went:

“I’ve got two A’s,” the small boy said.
His voice was filled with glee.
His beaming father said, “That’s great!”
“I’m so proud you belong to me!”

“Mom, I’ve got the dishes done.”
The girl called from the door.
Her mother smiled and softly said,
“Each day I love you more.”

“I’ve mowed the grass,” the tall boy said,
“And edged the sidewalks too.”
His father answered “Thank you!”
“For all the helpful things you do!”

Give a hug, or thanks or praise,
For the tasks your children do,
If they’re to lead a happy life,
So much depends on you.

Great poem for avoiding those sorts of put downs and building kids up instead.

Thanks for this. I definitely felt sad when I thought about little Johnny from the first example sitting in his office twenty years later at 2 a.m. saying “no, this isn’t good enough!”

Hi Gio .. lovely video .. it’s excellent when adults support and show happiness with kids, give them the opportunity to try all things, they’ll fail sometimes, but they will have achieved so much inthe process and in seeing the adult set the example.

Fantastic and I love the stories too ..

Thank you Giovanna,

What is said can sure hurt sometimes. Hopefully we can all be like the second part of that poem. We have all seen the effects of the first part of it in people all around us. Are we part of the problem or solution to that problem. This goes with everyone not just children. Are we not someones child, even if you are 102 years old. We all deserve this good treatment, not the bad.

What a wonderful post, it sure makes you think. Thank you.

It’s a great reminder to focus on the way forward, and the strengths. Light the fire for possibility.

Hi Paul,
We should all focus on building up one another; kids being the most important one of all.

Hi Chris,
Hopefully, we can be more careful about what we say or do to our children. I sure hope we create less of the first example, but more of the second example. :-) Thanks for your comment and joining the conversation.
